ANNOUNCEMENTS
 

ALOHA UNITED WAY final update: the University of Hawaii campuses on Oahu raised $340,000 for Aloha United Way, exceeding its goal of $316,000 by $24,000. The law school also exceeded its goal of $2500!

CALIFORNIA BAR – our graduates who passed the California bar: J. DAVID BREEMER, ELIZABETH ROBINSON, CATHERINE BEJERANA, STEPHANIE MCGEE, KAREN ARIKAWA, and JESSICA EAR.

NEW YORK BAR – our 2001 graduates who took the New York bar were all successful: ANNELIESE PAK, JEAN BLEICH, NICHOLE SHIMAMOTO and JAKE MCINTYRE. Congratulations!

   
ETE BOWL RALLY/KANIKAPILA
 
The Ete Bowl Rally on November 16 featured entertainment from the law school ohana; poetry reading by PROF. DANIELLE CONWAY-JONES, opera from IAN HLAWATI 3L, singing and guitar playing from STEVE NICHOLS 3L, slack key guitar from LORI NAGASAKO 1L and THEODORE IRELAND II 1L, dancing from our Hula Halau led by ABBY DUNN 3L and including PROF. VIRGINIA HENCH (sorry, other members names not available at press time), guitar and vocals from DAVID KATZ 1L, an acoustic guitar and vocal performance from PROF. CHRIS IIJIMA, more vocal stylings from SARAH KALAS 2L and TOOTIE GLENDON 1L, death metal from DAN DAVIDSON 3L, 1L rap by MARCUS LANDSBERG and MAUNA KEA TRASK, traditional Rapa Nui dance by BIANCA LEITEL 1L, vocals by EMI MORITA 3L and island style music from DELIA ULIMA '00 and her band. Also other island style bands: the Kava Boys, Round and Round, and Na Waihoolulu o Ke Anuenue. Apologies to those entertainers omitted. A big mahalo to talent empresario, musician, singer and master of ceremonies TJ QUAN 2L!

The game itself was “one of the best ever!” Held on November 18, the final score was 5-3 for the Bruzers. Names of all players and coaches not available at press time, but special acknowledgments to co-players of the game, LE’A KANEHE 3L and EMILY LAROQUE 3L, super-organizer MICHELLE PUU 2L and the coaches. Names in next issue.

 
FACULTY
 

DAVID CALLIES’ article "Property Rights After Palazzolo: When What You Know Can Hurt You" has been accepted for publication in Probate & Property, the bimonthly magazine of the ABA Section on Probate and Property in its March/April issue. PROF. CALLIES’s newest co-authored and co-edited book “Taking Land” is listed in the UH Press Spring Summer 2002 New Books catalog.

ERIC YAMAMOTO will be the holder of the Haywood Burns Civil Rights Chair, at CUNY Law School in the spring. The Chair holder is selected each year from an international pool of people engaged in civil and human rights work. In addition to teaching a full load and delivering a series of lectures to a variety of audiences in New York, PROF. YAMAMOTO will be the first "academic" to hold the Chair, as well as the first Asian American.

 
LAW SCHOOL FAMILY
 
Former Dean JEREMY HARRISON had a serious heart attack a few weeks ago. He was lucky in that the doctors had him on the operating table within 90 minutes of the first chest pain. He says he is feeling fine now.

15th ANNUAL ALUMNI/FRIENDS GOLF TOURNAMENT was held on Nov. 20 at Honolulu Country Club. 117 golfers participated with the proceeds used to fund scholarships for law students who have demonstrated a commitment to public service and the Law School's Elder Law Clinic.

In the all alumni category, the winners of the Governor Waihe‘e Trophy were SCOTT KUBOTA `84, EDSEL YAMADA `85, and NEAL AOKI `85 with a net score of 73. In the mixed alumni/guest flight, the winners of the Chief Justice Richardson Trophy were HARLAN KIMURA `82, Henry Katsuda, and Rick Conroy with a net score of 82. In the all guest flight, the winners of the Dean's Trophy were Eric Inouye, Kendall Quon and Sonny Quon with a net score of 72. The winners of the Nick Garcia Trophy for best putting team were BRIAN DELIMA `83, CRAIG SADAMOTO `84 and GERLAD TAKASE `82 with a score of 32.

Our mahalos to the hard working Golf Tournament Committee, the Law School Administration’s EILEEN BROMS and BRYAN CHEPLIC, and volunteers WENDY YAMAMOTO 2L and former PR/Development/Alumni Affairs specialist Jena Tanaka. Golf Committee co-chairs for the event were JIM STONE `76 and COLIN KURATA `78.
