Among the many end of year activities are the Environmental Law Program’s “Friends of the ELP Reception” Monday, April 22 and the “New Admittee Reception” on Thursday, April 25. Also coming up; Tuesday, April 30, the “Student Competitions End of Season Celebration” and Friday, May 3, the “Appellate Advocacy Awards Ceremony.”

MARK LEVIN will speak at the next UH Law and Society group meeting on April 22. His talk is entitled "The Wajin's Whiteness: Thoughts on Race and Law in Japan". Interested readers can find the paper on: http://www.nyu.edu/pubs/jilp/main/issues/33/33o.pdf.

JIM PIETSCH and LENNIE LEE have just returned from Cleveland where they attended the ABA/National Legal Aid and Defender Association “Equal Justice Conference.”

JON VAN DYKE participated in a meeting of the Ocean Governance Study Group (OGSG) at Boalt Hall School of Law, UC Berkeley, in early April entitled "Bringing New Law to Ocean Waters," and presented a paper entitled "The Evolution and International Acceptance of the Precautionary Principle." Professors VAN DYKE and CASEY JARMAN serve on the Steering Committee of the OGSG. LINDA PAUL ‘90 also made gave a presentation on the Honolulu Treaty.

JON VAN DYKE's article entitled "The Fundamental Right of the Marcos Human Rights Victims to Compensation" has been accepted for publication in the Philippine Law Journal, which is published at the University of the Philippines. Also, his paper entitled "Northeast Asian Seas - Conflicts, Accomplishments, and the Role of the United States," has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law.

The keynote speaker was Peter Carlisle, Prosecuting Attorney. Attorney Gerald Sekiya was presented with the 2002 Edmunds Award for Civility and Vigorous Advocacy. DEAN FOSTER is the secretary/ treasurer.

MATT MONEYHON 2L is the winner of the inaugural CCS John DeFrancis Award for best paper in Chinese Studies presented at the SHAPS Graduate Student Conference in March. His paper, "Controlling Xinjiang: Autonomy on China's 'New Frontier'", explores the legal structure, underlying agenda, and implications of "autonomy" in Xinjiang; an endeavor designed to further understanding of Uighur dissatisfaction with the current autonomy regime. The cash award honors Professor Emeritus John DeFrancis, 90, who is completing work on what will be the most comprehensive Chinese-English dictionary available. The APIL Community Board raised funds for four $3000 summer grants. Our 2002 summer grantees are: TRISHA WATSON 2L – Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation, ANNA LISA VIDAD 3L – Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline, LINDA ARAGON 1L – Na Keiki Law Center/Volunteer Legal Services of Hawaii, and SUMMER KUPAU 1L – Maui Coastal Land Trust

KANOE KANE 2L has accepted a two-year clerkship with Chief Justice Ronald Moon, Hawaii Supreme Court, upon graduation.

DESIREE HIKIDA 3L recently married Samson Mokuohai during spring break.

ANDREW COHEN 2L will be spending the fall semester in Japan where he will be doing intellectual property work for a law firm. He recently placed 3rd in the Hawaii Fencing Open.

KIRK CALDWELL’s wife, Donna Tanoue, has been selected as one of the 2002 UH Distinguished Alumni. Kirk ‘84 and Donna recently returned from Washington D.C. where Donna was the chair of the FDIC under Pres. Bill Clinton.
