The law school hosted several events last week. The FRIENDS of the ENVIRONMETAL LAW PROGRAM filled the Moot Court Room on April 22, 2002, to hear Co-Directors CASEY JARMAN and DENISE ANTOLINI, and students TRISH WATSON 2L, IAN HLAWATI 3L, JED DAVIS 3L, LEILANI TAN 3L, CHRIS KEMPNER 3L, CAL CHIPCHASE 3L, ROBERT HARRIS 3L and PROF. DOUG CODIGA.

The law school’s FRIENDS ADVISORY BOARD hosted a warm reception for PRES. EVAN and KIT DOBELLE on April 23 at the home of Don and BEADIE DAWSON ’81. Our hula halau performed, with KIRSHA DURANTE 1L, SHIRLEY GARCIA 3L, PROF. VIRGINIA HENCH, SUMMER KUPAU 1L, and EMI MORITA 3L and led by ABBY DUNN 3L. Thanks also to volunteers STANTON OISHI 2L, ROBERT HARRIS 3L, MATT MONEYHON 2L and JOE KOTOWSKI 2L.

Our NEW ADMITTEE RECEPTION on April 25 welcomed 47 new admittees, some who flew in from Wash, DC. Maryland, California and the neighbor islands. CJ WILLIAM S. RICHARDSON and UH Manoa Interim Chancellor DEANE and Mrs. NEUBAUER also attended along with PRESCOTT STEWART, Exec. Assistant to Pres. Dobelle.

The STUDENT COMPETITIONS END OF SEASON CELEBRATION to honor each of our Moot Court and Client Counseling teams will be held this Tuesday, April 30. The law student to receive the Edmunds Award for Civility and Vigorous Advocacy will also be named.

DENISE ANTOLINI has been named Co-Director of the law school's Environmental Law Program along with Prof. CASEY JARMAN, who has served as director for many years.

HAZEL BEH has returned from her spring semester away teaching at Hastings College of Law in San Francisco.

SCOTT BURNHAM is doing a Corporate Training Workshop for the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland, Oregon this week.

DAVID CALLIES’ article on development agreements and impact fees co-authored with JULIE TAPPENDORF ’97 (presently an associate with Chicago's Holland & Knight)) was selected for publication in the 2002 Land Use & Environmental Law Review as one of the ten best (out of over 100) of the year. The article was chosen after a two-tier review by two panels of land use and environmental law professors from around the country.

MARK LEVIN’s opinions were featured in the Viewpoint section of the March 27 Kauai Garden Island newspaper. The article, titled "The firefly tribe of Japan," argues that restaurant restrictions on smoking should not negatively affect Japanese tourism for Kauai. Nationally, PROF. LEVIN’s book review of Iwasawa Yuji's International Law, Human Rights, and Japanese Law was published in the spring 2002 edition of the Journal of Japanese Studies.

 
STUDENTS
 

CARL FOYTIK 3L was the subject of a front-page story in the April 23 Honolulu Advertiser. Before Carl entered law school, he urged local lawyers to file a class action on behalf of welfare recipients whose benefits were cut by the state in the late 1990’s. The state just announced a tentative agreement to repay up to $1.5 million.

ANGELA CORREA-PEI ’99 gave birth to a baby boy on April 22, MEKI LANAKILANOKAMEA'OIESU CORREA PEI (Victory through Jesus). Ang, daddy Meki and baby are all doing well.

UH Wahine Athletics, headed by MARILYN MONIZ-KAHOOHANOHANO '79, is being honored on May 2, 2002, at a Benefit Dinner at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom. Proceeds will go to endowed scholarships for athletes.
