ANNOUNCEMENTS |

At the Annual Law School Awards ceremony on August 26, ALISON CONNER received the Outstanding Professor of the Year award, HONORABLE DAVID EZRA received the Outstanding Adjunct Professor Award and GRANT HELGESON received the Outstanding Staff Member award. WILLIAMSON CHANG and JON VAN DYKE were honored for their 25 years of teaching here. Certificate of Service Awards were also given to RONALD BROWN, LILLIAN NAKAMURA and BARILYN SAKAMOTO. Recent gifts to the school include Case Bigelow & Lombardi's pledge
to build an endowment for a student scholarship honoring the late Bruce
Bigelow, a generous five-year pledge from McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon
to support the Annual Fund and set up an endowment in the firm’s
name; and a 10-year pledge from GARY GALIHER '77 and DIANE ONO '91 to
support an annual Galiher Ono Distinguished Public Lecture Series to motivate,
educate, and inspire the people of Hawai'i on how to improve the social,
economic, cultural, and political well-being of our state and to enhance
the reputation of the School of Law and the University of Hawai'i. 13
new endowments have been established as part of our recent development
campaign. |

DENISE ANTOLINI is co-chair and moderator of a panel on September 27 called "Environmental ADR: Promise or Peril?" at this year's Hawaii State Bar Association's Annual Convention. Prof. Antolini, Chair of the HSBA Natural Resources Section, has organized the panel with CHUCK CRUMPTON ‘78, Chair of the HSBA ADR Section. The panel features keynote speaker Cherie Shanteau, Senior Mediator for the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution (Arizona) and two distinguished Hawai`i mediators (Judge John McConnell and Peter Adler), who will role-play a live mediation session with six top Hawai`i lawyers and business leaders. WSRSL participants include: BEADIE DAWSON '81, who will discuss the potential role and limitations of traditional ho`oponono in environmental conflicts; MALIA AKUTAGAWA '97, who will present the perspective on the Native Hawaiian community on resolving water rights disputes; and ANGELA ANDERSON 1L. DAVID CALLIES was quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Honolulu Star Bulletin and interviewed on Rhode Island's National Public Radio this summer on private property rights vs. eminent domain. KEITH AMEMIYA '91, executive director, Hawaii High School Athletic Association, was named by Pacific Business News as one of the 2001 Forty Under 40 - important young community leaders. LAWRENCE R.COHEN '88 has been reappointed as a per diem judge in the First Circuit. The July-Dec.2001 issue of Malamalama, the magazine of the UH system, makes many references to law school graduates in the Alumni Notes. JACK FRITZ '79 is also featured as one of the recipients of the 2001 Distinguished Alumni Award, and DEXTER KAIAMA'86 is the subject of a long profile. LAW SCHOOL FAMILY FRIEDA HONDA is a new grandmother to baby boy Ty Hiroshi Keawe Honda, born in Hilo to Chris and Erica Honda. LARRY FOSTER's wife, Brenda Foster, is the subject of a feature article
in the September/Oct. issue of national magazine"Islands." As
Governor Ben Cayetano's National and International Executive Policy Assistant,
she is also the state's second ranking protocol officer among her varied
responsibilities. |
