Welcome to BRIAN CHEPLIC, our new Public Relations/Development/ Alumni Affairs Specialist who will join us on Wed. Oct. 17. His office will be Room 213, X65516. Brian has been working for the Social Science Research Institute and was formerly with the Matsunaga Institute for Peace as the UH ADR coordinator. He is also an assistant producer for KITV. SUBSTANCE ABUSE. The University has a substance abuse policy for university campus communities and worksites. University faculty, staff and students are not permitted to manufacture, distribute, possess, use, dispense or be under the influence of illegal drugs and/or alcohol at University sponsored or approved events or on University property or in buildings used by the University for education, research or recreational programs. DENISE ANTOLINI spoke about "What Hawaii Businesses Should Know About Citizens Suits" at the 2001 Environmental Risk Management Seminar sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and the lawfirm of McCorriston Miller Mukai and MacKinnon held on October 10, 2001. JOHN BARKAI is among the featured entertainers along with the Mayors of each county at the Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation annual Mayors' dinner on Sat. October 20, this year a masquerade party. ALISON CONNER attended the 50th anniversary meeting of the American Society of Comparative Law on October 5 and 6, where she was elected to the Society's Executive Committee. RANDY ROTH will speak at Duke University on October 26. His topic is "Sacrifice Minimization: Non-charitable gifts for reluctant donors." Prof. Roth will also be speaking at the annual Chaminade Tax Institute on November 8. His topic is "Representing Trust Beneficiaries." |

RANDY GEUY'01 and his wife Tracie are the proud parents of their first baby, Maura Ann Geuy, born at Kapiolani on Oct. 11 and weighing in at 5 lbs, 12 oz, at Kapi'olani Med Center, at 0913, 10/11/01. Mother and baby are doing fine! ELISE TSUGAWA'00 is the new law clerk at the University's General Counsel Office. Elise just returned from spending a year on the Big Island. Federal Magistrate Judge BARRY KURREN'77 is the subject of a long interview about federal practice in the October issue of the Hawaii Bar Journal. HELENE GAY PARKER '95, formerly a prosecutor with the Office of the Attorney General in Texas, is now managing partner of Parker & Associates. She practices Family Law, specializing in interstate and international child support litigation, and Estate Planning. She is also a Certified Mediator in Texas. ELIZABETH KENT '85 is currently on leave as director of the Alternative
Dispute Resolution branch of the Hawai'i Judiciary to work as a deputy
director for the Department of Human Services to help provide services
and assistance to people in need. |

DEAN LARRY FOSTER'81 will be attending the ABA conference on foreign legal education "Partnership in Legal Education for the XXI Century: A Dialogue Between American and Foreign Legal Educators" in San Francisco on October 26 and 27. GRANT HELGESON recently attended the Law School Admissions Council Chicago Forum for prospective law school applicants where he spoke to over 100 students interested in our law school. LAURIE TOCHIKI'80 will be attending the Law Schools' United Law School Forum in Newark, NJ on Oct. 26. This forum replaced the New York Forum originally scheduled for Sept. 14 at the World Trade Center Marriott. AMY ONO attended the Newcomers Conference sponsored by the Law School Admissions Council in Philadelphia in early September. Amy was originally scheduled to then attend the New York Forum but which was canceled due to the events of Sept. 11. CAROL MON LEE attended the Washington DC Forum during the summer where
she met with over 100 students interested in attending law school in Hawaii.
CAROL also recently served as a judge for Three Outstanding Young Persons
Awards presented by the Hawaii Business Jaycees. |
