ANNOUNCEMENTS
 

LAW LIBRARY FOOD AND DRINK POLICY REMINDER: food and drinks are not permitted in the Library. The only exception is plain water, which must be carried in a closed bottle, subject to inspection by the Library Staff (covered cups are not allowed). Prohibited food or drinks will be confiscated.

BONE MARROW DRIVE will be sponsored by PHI DELTA PHI on November 8, from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M., SR 1. Bone marrow registration requires taking a tiny bit of blood that is then typed and listed on a national registry. Should your blood “match” a person with Leukemia, the bone marrow association will then contact you and see if you would be willing to donate some bone marrow. You need only register once.

   
FACULTY
 

DAVID CALLIES will travel to Tokyo at the end of the month to present a paper on development agreements and habitat conservation plans at a land use and environmental law conference, and to help with the formation of a Tokyo chapter for LAI, an international land economics honorary society. Prof. Callies is past chair of the Aloha Chapter of LAI and a past international member of the year (an honor he shares with Professor RANDY ROTH).

A commentary on the recent USSCT regulatory takings case of Palazzolo v. Rhode Island, written by PROF. CALLIES, will appear in the November edition of Land Use Law and Zoning Digest, a monthly publication of the American Planning Association.

DANIELLE CONWAY-JONES was invited by Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Guam, The Honorable John S. Unpingco, as a guest speaker at the weeklong Pacific Judicial Conference in Saipan, Guam and Palau this past August. She spoke on E-Commerce topics including Personal Jurisdiction and the Internet, The Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act, the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act, and the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act, Cyberpiracy, and Contributory Copyright Infringement.

PROF. CONWAY JONES also recently spoke at the National Contract Management Association Conference on the issue of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation of Federal Government Contract Bid Protests and Contract Disputes on Oct. 17 at the Hale Koa Hotel. PROF. CONWAY JONES is scheduled to speak at the Symposium on Medial, Preservation, and Community on November 10, 2001. She will present on the topic of Copyright and Trademark Protection of Indigenous Cultural Arts and Symbols.

CHRIS IIJIMA is one of the panelist at the University Peace
Initiative/Professors Opposing War presentation to be held at the Campus Center Courtyard on Oct.24 between noon and 1:30 entitled "9/11: A Different Dialogue What's Wrong with this Picture? The Re-Racing of America."

RANDY ROTH will speak at the Connecticut Tax Institute on December 3. His topic is "Protecting Assets from Future Creditors Legally, Ethically and Morally."

PROF.ROTH will also speak to the Washington Society of CPAs on December 10. His topic is "Estate Planning in a Changing and Uncertain World."

 
STUDENTS
 
MICHELLE OISHI 2L (chief organizer), DELLA AU 2L, KRISTIN LUNDGREN 2L, NORM CHENG 3L, PAUL HERRAN 1L, HOKULEI LINDSEY 2L, and SHIRLEY GARCIA 2L recently assisted at the"Managing Hawaii's Public Trust Doctrine" symposium held at the UH Architecture School on Saturday October 6, co-sponsored by the Law School's Environmental Law Program and several state and county agencies and organizations. PROF. DENISE ANTOLINI was one of the symposium organizers. The Symposium was a great success, attracting approximately 200 people from Oahu and the neighbor islands from the diverse sectors of the bar and public interested in the Waiahole Water case and water rights issues.

T.J. QUAN 2L and KIM CHANBONPIN 2L are the newest members to our three-time national champion Native American Moot Court Team. They join returning members MARC NAKAMURA 3L, EMI MORITA 3L, and MARK HAMILTON 3L for this year's competition at Arizona State University.

Members of `Ahahui o Hawai`i were interviewed on Thursday, October 18th for a PBS presentation entitled "Matters of Race." Hui members LE`A KANEHE 3L and HOKULEI LINDSEY 2L joined Hui Advisor AMY ONO in a roundtable discussion providing personal perspectives as to the impact race-focused dialogs have had on Native Hawaiians.

   
ALUMNI
 

ALLISON MIZUO '01 returned to law school last week to speak at an information session regarding federal judicial clerkships on October 17. She joined PROF. DENISE ANTOLINI who share their experiences as federal judicial law clerks.

 
LAW SCHOOL FAMILY
 

Two new grandpas! PROF. RANDY ROTH is the proud new grandpa of Madeline Elizabeth "Maddie" born on Monday, October 15 in Baltimore.

First year student GLENN YOSHIDA became a grandfather on Saturday, October 14. The baby's name is Victoria. Mother and daughter are doing well.

Second Floor Custodian, WALTER TANAKA, is doing well, after undergoing heart surgery.
