Welcome to DOUG JANES, the law school’s new development officer. DOUG has worked at UH since 1997. Most recently, he has been the Interim Director of Donor Relations at UH Foundation. A graduate of the Univ. of Arizona, Doug replaces EILEEN BROMS who is now full-time at UH Foundation as Director of Development Operations. Mahalo, EILEEN, for your 9+ years here at the law school! LILLIAN NAKAMURA, our Library Acquisitions Clerk, has taken early retirement and is now at St Francis West Hospice Center. We send her our warmest aloha. The new and improved Law Library Web Page designed by webmaster BJ, Bradford Yamamoto, is up. http://library.law.hawaii.edu Aloha to MARK COKEE ’02 our temporary Public Relations/Alumni/Development specialist. He will be replaced by his classmate, DESIREE HIKIDA MOKUOHAI ’02. Desiree will work for a 12-week period. CAROL MON LEE will be attending the Law School Admissions Council San Francisco Forum this weekend. LAURIE TOCHIKI will be attending the LSAC Los Angeles Forum next weekend. LSAC has reported that the October LSAT was the largest test day in the history of the exam. UH’s Institutional Effectiveness Report, 2002 Update, includes
a short section on distinctions and achievements. Recent accomplishments
of the law school are noted several times, including reference to PROF.

HAZEL BEH’s article “Tort Liability for Intentional
Acts of Family Members: Will Your Insurer Stand by You?” 68 Tenn.
L. Rev.1 (2000) was featured as an article of interest in the Connecticut
Insurance Law Journal recently. DEAN LARRY FOSTER has been appointed to serve on the UH Manoa Committee on Naming Programs and Facilities as well as the Manoa International Education Committee. CASEY JARMAN has been appointed a hearings officer for the County of Hawai`i.
JON VAN DYKE’s op-ed essay "Costs of Invading Iraq Long-Lasting, Disastrous" was published in the Honolulu Advertiser on October 21, 2002. PROF. VAN DYKE also completed a report entitled "Hawaii's Sunshine Law -- Criteria of Compliance -- A Description of Its Requirements for Members of Boards and Commissions and Their Support Staff" which has been submitted for approval to the Second Circuit Court on Maui. JON VAN DYKE is representing two Kauai County officials in an oral argument before the Ninth Circuit on November 6 in Honolulu. |

STUDENTS |

KANOE KANE 3L, JOSH MEDEIROS 2L and KIM CHANBONPIN 3L made it to the final round of the 2002 Stetson International Environmental Moot Court competition this past week. They went up against Queensland University of Technology (Australia), but lost. This was the law school's strongest finish to date in this competition. HOKULEI LINDSEY 3L presented her directed reading research and draft paper at the World's Indigenous Peoples: Perspectives and Processes Conference held in Kelowna, B.C. in October. Her presentation was part of the session entitled: Culture, Heritage and Intellectual Property Rights: Current Opportunities and Challenges for Indigenous Communities. STANTON OISHI 3L’s Second-Year Seminar paper, "RFRA II: The
Failure of the Religious Land Use & Institutionalized Persons Act
of 2000 Under Section 5 of the Fourteenth Amendment," was selected
for Honorable Mention in the 19th R. Marlin Smith Student Writing Competition,
sponsored by the American Planning Association Planning & Law Division. |

KEITH AMEMIYA ’91, executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, was the subject of the Midweek cover story on October 30. REX FUJICHAKU ’98 has been an associate at Fried, Frank, Harris Shriver & Jacobson in Washington DC doing antitrust. He will be visiting the law school this week. Among the many running for election this year is Clyde Ben Morita, father of EMI MORITA ’02, who is a candidate for a seat in the State House. |
