The Inaugural WSRSL Distinguished Lectureship in Real Property will be held this Friday, Nov. 22 with guest speaker, Prof. James Ely from Vanderbilt. His talk “Can the “Despotic Power” be Tamed? Reconsidering the Public Use Limitation on Eminent Domain” is free and open to the public and is followed by a reception. The lectureship was established by The Gifford Foundation to honor PROF. DAVID CALLIES and JERRY HIATT ’77 for their work in the field of real property. A display of Prof. Ely’s scholarship is on view at the law school library. Contact 956-5516 for more information.

The Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences and representatives from Zhaoqing City visited us recently to discuss a potential Hawaii-China ecosystem health partnership. This is a joint project with the law school, medical school, the School of Travel Industry Management and others.

DOUG CODIGA ’94’s article “Reflections on the Potential Growth of Mindfulness Meditation in the Law” was recently published in Harvard Negotiation Law Review, Vol. 7, Spring 2002.

JON VAN DYKE delivered a paper on "The Legal Regime of the Strait of Gibraltar" at a Symposium on the Straits Used for International Navigation in Istanbul on November 16, sponsored by the Turkish Marine Research Foundation. He will then be flying to Australia to deliver a paper on "Environmental Obligations and the Law of the Sea: Institutional Challenges and Inteactions" at a Workshop on Oceans Management in the 21st Century: Institutional Frameworks and Responses under the LOS Convention, sponsored by the University of Sydney Faculty of Law. PROF. VAN DYKE will also be representing two employees of the Palau Senate in an oral argument before the Palau Supreme Court on December 9.

ERIC YAMAMOTO recently spoke at the Santa Clara Social Justice Center and participating in the Shaking the Foundations Lawyering Conference at Stanford.

NATIVE AMERICAN MOOT COURT TEAM has announced its newest members. KIN MANIBUSAN 3L, SHANNON ALIVADO 2L, and MARIE NEILSON 2L will join returning members KIM CHANPBONPIN 3L and LEIHINAHINA SULLIVAN 3L at the 2003 NAMC competition held at Columbia University in New York.

2002 ETE BOWL final score: Bruzers 7, Etes 6. In a spectacular game described as "the most competitive in remembrance," the Etes took the lead, 3-2, the first time in years that the Etes led the Bruzers during the game. After holding this lead into half-time, the Bruzers ultimately regained the lead at the close of the game. Great game and great spirit!

THOMAS KAULUKUKUI ’77, chairman of the Queen Lililuokalani Trust, is featured on the cover of this month’s Hawaii Business.

DENNIS YAMASE ’82 was confirmed earlier this year by the FSM Congress to the position of Associate Justice for the Federated States of Micronesia Supreme Court. He had been responsible for codifying the laws of the FSM while a consultant for the Asian Development Bank.

JON ZAHABY ’01, RENEE FURUTA ’01 and STEVEN YAMASHITA ’01 have recently established a new Hawaii Junior Jaycee chapter, the “Leeward Business Development” chapter to assist the community and businesses in the area. New members are welcome.

CHIEF JUSTICE WILLIAM S. RICHARDSON is interviewed in the new film “An Untold Triumph – The Story of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments, U.S. Army” shown at the recent Hawaii International Film Festival. CJ was one of the few none Filipinos serving in the regiment during World War II.
