DAVID CALLIES will chair a panel on land development agreements and annexation agreements for the American Planning Association annual national conference in Denver in April, 2002. JULIE TAPPENDORF ’97,practicing in Chicago with Holland & Knight, is part of the panel. PROF. CALLIES and Ms. Tappendorf are writing a book on the subject for the Environmental Law Institute, to be published in mid-2003. CHRIS IIJIMA has just been elected to the National Board of Governors of the Society of American Law Teachers. RANDY ROTH is a speaker at the 17th Annual ALI—ABA Advanced Estate Planning Techniques program to be held Feb. 20-22, 2003 at the Fairmond Kea Lani Hotel in Maui. JON VAN DYKE’s article "North-East Asian Seas -- Conflicts, Accomplishments and the Role of the United States" has been published in the International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law, Vol. 17, No.3, p. 397 (2002). PROF. VAN DYKE has prevailed before the Ninth Circuit in two recent cases. In a case decided last week, the appellate court agreed that two Kauai County officials had qualified immunity against a damage suit brought by a citizen whose gun license was revoked, and in the case of Honolulu Weekly v. Harris, the Ninth Circuit denied the petition for rehearing and rehearing en banc, thus confirming the decision upholding the City's Waikiki newsrack ordinance. On December 9, PROF. VAN DYKE will be presenting an oral argument before the Appellate Division of the Palau Supreme Court in a separation-of-powers case. |
