We welcome dean candidate Prof. Allen Easley this week. Prof. Easley is from Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas. He will address the community on Friday at 4:00 with a reception to follow. Aloha to our new Library Acquisitions Clerk, CARLA SIMEONA. She comes to us from Kapiolani Community College, Arts & Sciences Department. We also welcome returning Visiting Scholar, PROF. CHONG KO CHOI from Korea. He will be here for one month to work on his book “History of East Asian Jurisprudence” and to help celebrate the centennial year of Koreans in Hawai’i. UH DAY at the State Capitol is this Tuesday, February 4. The law school will have a table display showcasing some of our faculty and student achievements. The current issue of MALAMALAMA, the magazine of the UH system, has several
references to the law school, including our International Environmental
Moot Court Team performance (KANOE KANE 3L, KIM CHANBONPIN 3L and JOSH
MEDEIROS 2L), PROF. DAVID CALLIES’s recent induction as a fellow
in the American Institute of Certified Planners, the establishment of
our new LL.M. program, the new Law Student’s Pledge taken by our
incoming students at Orientation in the fall, and an update on several

DENISE ANTOLINI was recently selected by the U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program as the 2003-2004 Distinguished Chair in Environmental Studies in Turin, Italy. PROF. ANTOLINI will teach an undergraduate and graduate course in environmental law for the Spring 2004 semester at the Polytechnic Institute of Turin. The Distinguished Chair award is the highest level of the Fulbright Scholar Program, which awards over 800 U.S. faculty and professionals grants to lecture or research abroad each year. Professor Antolini, who will be on sabbatical the Fall 2003 and Spring 2004 semesters, plans to move with her family to Torino in Summer 2003 and spend the Fall semester working on her sabbatical projects. HAZEL BEH has been chosen to supervise Lim Chong Fong, in the Fullbright Professional Exchange Program. He is a practicing lawyer from Malaysia. He will be in residence in Hawaii from October 2003 to January 2004. He will be comparing Malaysian and American construction law and alternative dispute resolution. ALISON CONNER was elected to the 2003 executive committee of the Section on Graduate Studies for Foreign Lawyers at January's AALS meeting. She also serves on the Executive Committee of the American
JON VAN DYKE just returned from Vanuatu for meetings with their Foreign Ministry about sea shipments of ultra hazardous radioactive cargoes. He will be at Boalt Hall, UC Berkeley later this month, delivering a paper on environmental law in the Pacific. |

INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MOOT COURT TEAM is highlighted in a long article in the January 24, 2003 edition of Pacific Business News (page 22) entitled, "UH law students stand tall in college moot court competition." MATTHEW MONEYHON 3L is the recipient of the "Chung-fong & Grace Ning Excellence in Chinese Studies Graduate Award" announced on Friday at the Center for Chinese Studies dinner.
