DEPLOYMENT OF MILITARY PERSONNEL – UH’s policy is not to penalize a student for being unable to complete course requirements because of military deployment. U.S. military personnel, reservists and members of the Hawai’i National Guard who are called to active duty will be provided a full refund of tuition and mandatory fees for this spring semester. For more information, contact DEAN TOCHIKI or DEAN LEE. Topics in International Legal Studies - Philippine Law starts on Feb. 18 and ends on March 20 with Adjunct Instructors CECILE YASAY and PERFECTO YASAY. ABA Site Visit – March 2-5, 2003. Our sabbatical site visit for reaccredidation purposes will take place soon. The 7 team members will be visiting classes, meeting with students, faculty, staff and others. A more detailed schedule will be distributed separately. We look forward to welcoming the team to Hawai’i and our school. VIOLET BAGUYO is our new custodian. She and Patrick will cover both the first and second floors. Cora will continue to work in the law library. Violet was previously at the Outrigger Hotels. Welcome! HAZEL BEH’S article, “Tort Liability for Intentional
Acts of Family Members: Will Your Insurer Stand By You,” was cited
favorably in Warren ex rel. Warren v. Glascoe, 2003 WL 282574 (Miss.App.
2003). DAVID CALLIES’s article, "Historic Preservation Law in the United States,” 32 Envtl. L. Rep. 10348 (March 2002) has been identified as an important contribution in land use and takings law and will be reprinted with other articles in the 2003 Zoning and Planning Law Handbook. PROF. CALLIES recently delivered a paper on land use and water rights at a water rights/land use conference held at Chapman University Law School on February 7th. FORMER VISITING PROF. DAN TARLOCK (2001) also presented a paper. MARK LEVIN spent two days in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture as a National Ministry of Education Foreign Advisor, addressing the establishment of a law school for the San'in Region of Japan. PROF. LEVIN gave a public speech at Shimane National University, was the guest speaker at the annual meeting of the Shimane Prefecture Bar Association, and had several private meetings with Shimane University faculty and administration advising on the legal education methods in the United States and, using WSRSL as an example, the importance of a law school for the economic and social development of a region relatively removed from the national center. Reports of his talk were featured in the local news pages of two major newspapers, the Asahi Shimbun and the Yomiuri Shimbun. |

JON-ERIK G. STORM’s article on the affirmative action debates titled "Bakke Revisited" preaching for a class-based solution to affirmative action was recently published on Westlaw at 2003 WL 5422360. ENVIRONMENTAL MOOT COURT TEAM members ERIN ATKINSON 2L, DELLA AU-BELATTI 3L, SUMMER KUPAU 2L, DAWN NEKOBA 2L, STANTON OISHI 3L are traveling to New York this week to participate in the Environmental Moot Court National Competition at Pace University. PROF. DENISE ANTOLINI is also accompanying the team. CLIENT COUNSELING TEAM members RHONDA CHING 2L, BRENDAN BAILEY 3L, VAN LUONG 3L, MAX HANNEMAN 3L, are also traveling this week to the Los Angeles for the regional competitions. This year’s topic is Criminal Law. JESSUP MOOT COURT TEAM members KANOE KANE 3L, KIM CHANBONPIN 3L, ANNE LEE 3L, MARION REYES-BURKE 2L and ROSA FLORES 3L will be traveling to California next week for their regional competition. ALLISON CHANG '97 a former award-winning Jessup team member, will practice with the team while they are in San Francisco on their way to UC Davis. Public Health Law Organization (PHLO) is the school’s newest student
organization. Part of its mission is to promote good health. |

LESLIE “LES” H. KONDO '90 has been appointed director of the Office of Information Practices by Gov. Lingle. The state agency oversees the implementation and administration of Hawai`i's open record laws. Kondo is a partner with the law firm of Chun & Nagatani. JESSICA EAR ADLER '00 was visiting Hawaii recently. She will be starting as the CEO of Australian Commercial Dispute Center in Sydney, a nonprofit doing mediation, reconciliation, arbitration, training and ADR promotion. Last year JESSICA was in Cambodia working for the US Embassy in Phnom Penh as the US adoptions task person. CLAY ADLER '98 is the political economics officer at the US Consulate General in Sydney, Australia. WAYNE WEIGHTMAN '01 is working as an immigration attorney across from the US embassy in Cambodia. CHRIS WOO '98 recently married CORI KEKINA '95 and are living in Honolulu. BRETT RYAN '98 has made a career change and will be starting the police
academy soon in Honolulu. |
