ANNOUNCEMENTS
 

The second-generation of the law school web site is up and running thanks to our director of computer technology services, Tony Cao – www.hawaii.edu/law. The new features include our proposed LLM program to start in Fall 2003. The LLM application will be online shortly.

Prof. Masahisa Deguchi from Ritsumeikan University’s law faculty will be visiting the law school this week.

On Campus Interviews (OCI’s) are well underway and will continue through October 3. Many of the law firm interviewers are alumni.

 
FACULTY
 

DAVID CALLIES will present a paper, co-authored with CAL CHIPCHASE ‘02, at an ALI-ABA Inverse Condemnation conference in Chicago later this month, commenting upon and analyzing the recent USSCT regulatory taking decision, Tahoe-Sierra v. TRPA (April 2002). PROF. CALLIES will then present a paper in early October on customary law at a seminar on customary ocean law and sustainable resources in Tromso, Norway, chaired by sometime visitor to the law school, PROF. PETER OREBECK of Tromso University. Correction from last week: PROF. CALLIES was appointed to the professional development committee of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admission.

DANIELLE CONWAY-JONES is updating and revising part of former WSRSL PROF. JAY DRATLER’s treatise entitled “Intellectual Property: Commercial, Creative, and Industrial Property” for publication this fall. She is also speaking at three conferences this semester; Kamehameha High School on the topic of Cultural Heritage, Hawaiian/Pacific Archiving and Intellectual Property on September 18, 2002, the Hawai`i Library Association 2002 Annual Conference at Ko Olina Resort & Spa on Intellectual Property versus Cultural Property on September 28, 2002 and the 2002 Society of Human Resource Management Hawai`i State Conference on E-Commerce and Human Resources at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel on October 9, 2002.

KAREN GEBBIA-PINETTI is taking a medical leave for the remainder of the semester. She advises us she will be fine. Former ADJUNCT DAVID FARMER has agreed to teach Secured Transactions. We are still waiting for final confirmation of the instructor for Debtors’ & Creditors’ Rights. Welcome and mahalo to PROF. FARMER for stepping in!

LAURIE TOCHIKI is away this week doing student recruiting at the Chicago Forum, University of Wisconsin and the University of Indiana.

Former PROF. JAY DRATLER visited the law school this summer after having been away for 5 years. He holds a chair at the University of Akron School of Law.

ELP Stream Clean Up on Saturday at Manoa-Palolo stream was a big success collecting 17 bags of rubbish, 3 shopping carts, 1 sink, 1 table, a car battery and countless garden hoses! Thanks to TOOTIE GLENDON 3L, DAVID PAULSON 2L, ERIN ATKINSON 2L and friend Chuck, DOMINIQUE TANSLEY 1L and son Tanetoa, SUELYN TRAN 3L and ADRIENNE SUAREZ 1L.

ETE BOWL practices are in full swing and held at Kapiolani Park, across from the Diamond Head Tennis Courts on Friday afternoons at 3:30. This year’s game is Saturday, Nov. 16 with a pep rally on Friday, Nov. 15. The first mixer with the Bruzers is this Friday. TRISHA WATSON 3L married David Perreira over the summer and they are now looking forward to a new baby.


 
ALUMNI
 

Our alumns running for office for the first time won their primaries on Saturday: congratulations to DUKE AIONA ’81, KIRK CALDWELL ’84, SCOTT NISHIMOTO ’02 (unopposed), MAILE SHIMABUKURO ’00 and TOM WATERS ’93 who will now go on to the general election. Incumbents SCOTT SAIKI’91, SILVIA LUKE ’95 and BLAKE OSHIRO ’96 will represent their parties in the general. JON YOSHIMURA ’93 moved from the City Council to the Senate race and also won his primary. Alumns who are unopposed for reelection are DWIGHT TAKAMINE ’78, BRIAN TANIGUCHI ’78, CYNTHIA THIELEN ’78 and CAROL FUKUNAGA ’76.

ROSEMARY FAZIO ’78 is running for a seat on the Judicial Selection Commission.

LEILANI TAN ’02 married Alan Ching on August 3. She is now working at Marr Hipp Jones & Pepper and plans to take the February Hawaii bar exam.

STEPHANIE McGEE ’01 was married on May 29 and has moved to San Diego to join her husband who is in the Navy stationed in San Diego, but currently deployed to Pakistan.

 
LAW SCHOOL COMMUNITY
 
TRAVIS MIMURA, a Compute Technology Services student assistant, was selected to receive honorary award recognition by having his biography published in the 25th Annual Edition of The National Dean's List, 2001-2002. He is automatically eligible to compete for a $1,000 scholarship from the $50,000 to be awarded this year. Only 1/2 of 1% of the nation's college students receive this award.

CHADWICK COUNCIL, a CTS student assistant, won $50,000 (paid in installments) at the International Tekken Tournament, a video game tournament held in Los Angeles this summer.
