A new series of Downtown Lunch Meetings for Adjuncts will start on Friday, October 11 at Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel. This week’s topic “Skills Courses and related issues” will be lead by JOHN BARKAI and CALVIN PANG. Contact CAROL MON LEE caroll@hawaii.edu.

Hawaii State Bar Association Annual Bar Convention. The law school will have a double booth at this year’s convention on Oct. 17 and 18 at the Sheraton Waikiki. Students, alumni and the Deans will staff the booth. Faculty publications and law review issues will be available at no charge. Law school polo shirts will be for sale. Alumni membership also available.

Aloha to SUSAN WEBER, public services law librarian for the past year who will continue to work part-time for a few months.

STUDENT RECRUITMENT. LAURIE TOCHIKI returned from the Chicago Forum where there was a great interest in our Environmental Law Program. GRANT HELGESON just returned from the New York Forum. AMY ONO will attend “ WAPLA” (Western Assoc. of Pre-Law Advisors) and visit Colorado, Utah, Ariz. and New Mexico between Oct. 12 - 20.

   
FACULTY
 

RONALD BROWN gave a presentation at the International Association of Korean Lawyers on "Chinese Law and the Impact of the WTO and China's Legal System on Korean Trade and Investment in China,” held in Honolulu in August.

ARNOLD LUM had a close encounter with a black tip shark in late September. A color photo of ADJUNCT PROF. LUM standing by his chomped off surfboard was in the Honolulu Advertiser.

JIM PIETSCH is speaking at the HSBA convention session on Elder Law and Medicaid Planning Update on Oct. 17.

JON VAN DYKE represented Lieutenant Governor Gerson Jackson of the State of Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia in late September before the Kosrae State Court and was successful in getting a court ruling that the Kosrae Constitution does not impose term limits on the Lieutenant Governor, thus allowing him to run for a third term.

Class of 1977 had a 25th reunion at the home of GARY GALIHER ’77 and DIANE ONO ’91 on Sept. 28. Dean LARRY FOSTER ’81 and Class of ‘77 out of towners Prof. SUSAN CONNER (Chicago), JO KIM, JERRY HIATT, DIANE VAN DECAR, and LLOYD VAN DECAR (Big Island), and JEFF HERMAN (Los Angeles) joined many other members of this illustrious class.

GARRICK LAU ’01, currently practicing immigration law, is featured in an Oct. 3 Star Bulletin article “ A ‘Superman’ Understudy.” GARRICK, a quadriplegic since a swimming accident in high school, is pictured riding a roller coaster.
