JOHN BARKAI just returned from Japan where he was the keynote speaker at a two-day program in Tokyo and also gave a presentation in Kyoto at the 3rd International Symposium on Infrastructure Management and Financing.

LARRY FOSTER attended the 18th Biennial Meeting of Law Asia in Tokyo last week. While there he met with some of our Tokyo alums including MOON-KI CHAI ‘90, ERIC PIESNER ‘92, STEVEN HOWARD ‘98, MATT GRIEDER ‘01 and HARRIET LEWIS ‘76. Also in attendance for part of the meeting were the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan along with 900 lawyers from 28 countries. Others with UH connections included Professor Yoshiaki Nakamura, a past visitor to the school; Dean Michael Young (George Washington School of Law) who taught in one of our summer sessions. At least one of the papers presented included a citation to our own APLPJ!

MARK LEVIN traveled to Helsinki, Finland to serve as a faculty facilitator in a Joint Japanese-German Workshop on Tobacco Control sponsored by the American Cancer Society and its global counterpart, the International Union for Cancer Control. The workshop brought together tobacco control leaders from Japan and Germany for a program in advocacy methodology run by former US Federal Trade Commission Chairman Michael Pertschuk and taught by a four-person faculty from around the world, including PROF. LEVIN. With support also from the Law School's Fund for Academic Excellence, Professor Levin stayed on in Helsinki to attend the 12th World Conference on Tobacco OR Health. PROF. LEVIN will continue as the Resident Faculty Director for University of Hawai‘i's study abroad program in Kobe through the end of this year, and returning to Manoa in January.

CATHERINE THOMAS was awarded a grant to attend the 2003 American Association of Law Libraries Annual Meeting in Seattle this summer.

   
STUDENTS
   

END OF SUMMER BASH held on Saturday, August 30, at Rumours was well attended with over 200 students, faculty, alumni and friends enjoying the silent auction and live music. DEAN AVI SOIFER was welcomed and BEADIE DAWSON '81 received the student award. DELLA AU BELATTI '03 received a letter of commendation from the American Bar Association for her work as SBA President 2001-2003. SBA Pres. MING CHI 2L and Vice Pres. SCOTT SUZUKI 3L emceed. AIMEE LUM 2L, JILL HASEGAWA 3L, KARA YOUNG 2L and STACI UWAINE 2L and many volunteers coordinated this second annual event.

AFRICAN AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION of Hawaii hosted a dinner at PROF. DANIELLE CONWAY-JONES’s home to welcome our African-American law students. Also attending were African American faculty from other UH departments.

 
ALUMNI
 

CJ DUNCAN ‘00 is currently a staff attorney with the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection ("CBP") in the El Paso, TX field office. The CBP was created through a merger of the Customs Service, INS and Border Patrol after 9/11 and is one of new agencies under the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) umbrella.

RHONDA GRISWOLD ‘84 and MICHAEL NAUYOKAS ‘89 are among those profiled in the July issue of Honolulu magazine’s Best Lawyers in Hawai‘i 2003 issue. Many of our graduates are listed among the best in their field.

HO’OIPO PA ‘86 (ELIZABETH PA MARTIN) was elected chair of the Native American Rights Fund Board of Directors. NARF is a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, that assists American Indians, individuals and organizations with legal representation and advice on Indian law.

ANDREW STEWART ‘02 and SHEREE NITTA ‘02 celebrated their marriage on Sunday, August 31, 2003 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and are presently on their honeymoon in Europe.

WIL YAMAMOTO ‘02, former law clerk to the Honorable Sabrina S. McKenna ‘82 is now an associate at the law firm Reinwald O'Connor & Playdon LLP practicing civil litigation.
