By Bias or Point of View

Look for balance and fairness in a Web site. Web sites with a single point of view are inappropriate for academic research.

Consider the following in your evaluation:

  • Who created the site?
  • Who sponsors or supports the site (corporate, religious and other entities may infuse their own beliefs and practices into the site)?
  • Are other points of view included? Inclusion of different points of view indicates an attempt for balance and fairness.
  • Is the content language angry, defamatory or accusatory?
  • Does the site overtly or covertly promote prejudice, stereotypes, racism or sexism?
  • Does the site make you feel angry, confused or manipulated?

5.17 Based on the above, your review of site content, and a presence or absence of bias, is this Web site appropriate to use for your assignment? Why or why not?

5.18 You have learned to evaluate Web sites using several criteria. Of these criteria, which is the most difficult to evaluate, and why? If you have any lingering questions on whether the site is reputable or not, what are they?
