Description of library/collection
Kapolei Public Library is the newest and second largest of the 51 libraries in the Hawaii State Public Library System. The Library’s collection, which is now approximately up to 125,000 items, will grow considerably over the next year. We have a full time staff of 24, and emphasize providing quality programming and public service in a friendly, yet professional, environment.
Description of internship
This internship will provide the opportunity to observe and participate in collection management, reference, programming and other aspects of operations in a large public library. The applicant will be able to work at 4 different reference desks, Adult Nonfiction; Adult Fiction, Audio Visual and Hawaiiana; Young Adult and Children’s.
Completed or concurrent enrollment in LIS 601 (Introduction to Reference and Information Services) and LIS 610 (Introduction to Library and Information Services).
Willingness to learn the principles and practices of professional librarianship, with an emphasis on reference and collection management. Reliable self-starter who is able to work with minimum supervision; good verbal and written communication skills.
Flexible; the Library is open 6 days and two evenings (Tues., Wed.) a week. 10 hours a week, for 15 weeks, totaling 150 hours.
Learning/experiential goals or work outcomes expected
This is a unique opportunity to learn important aspects of professional librarianship in a large public library. Reference, collection management and programming skills will be learned in a hands-on situation.
Periodic formal and informal evaluations and discussions, followed by a LIS 690 Student Evaluation Form completed with the student near the end of the term.
