LIS Student Discussion List
(LIS-L)

LIS-L is an email discussion list dedicated to providing a network of support for the students of the Library and Information Science Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. This list is maintained by student volunteers under the guidance of LIS faculty members. LIS-L is a list processor (listproc) program. In order to send and receive messages, you must be subscribed to this list. Follow the instructions below.

detail Addresses

There are two different e-mail addresses related to this list:

  1. To send a message to everyone who is subscribed to this discussion list, send email to:

    lis-l@hawaii.edu

    then your message will be sent to all the subscribers of the list.

  2. To send a command to start/cancel your subscription or make some changes to it, send email to:

    listserv@hawaii.edu

    This address is not a real person. You are communicating with a computerized system that only accepts Listproc commands (see below).

detail Subscribe

To subscribe to LIS-L, send an email message to:

listserv@hawaii.edu

and type the following command into the body of your message:

SUBSCRIBE LIS-L Firstname Lastname

  • Replace FIRSTNAME and LASTNAME with your own names.
  • Leave the Subject line of your message blank.
  • Enter the above command only. Do not enter any other message or signature.

detail Postpone

To temporarily suspend your subscription to LIS-L, send an email message to:

listserv@hawaii.edu

and type the following command into the body of your message:

SET LIS-L NOMAIL

  • This is usually done when you go on vacation and do not want subscription mail to overflow your mailbox while you are gone.
  • Leave the Subject line of your message blank.
  • Enter the above command only. Do not enter any other message or signature.

To resume your subscription to LIS-L, send an email message to:

listserv@hawaii.edu

and type the following command into the body of your message:

SET LIS-L MAIL

  • Leave the Subject line of your message blank.
  • Enter the above command only. Do not enter any other message or signature.

To cancel your subscription to LIS-L, send an email message to:

listserv@hawaii.edu

and type the following command into the body of your message:

UNSUBSCRIBE LIS-L

  • Leave the Subject line of your message blank.
  • Enter the above command only. Do not enter any other message or signature.

detail Getting Help

To learn more about the commands you can send to the listproc server, send an email message to:

listserv@hawaii.edu

and type the following into the body of your message:

HELP

then you will receive detailed information on subscribing to the lists.
