HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I - An exhibit kicks off at Hamilton Library at UH about preventable damage to library collections entitled It Came from the Stacks!!! The purpose of this exhibit is to raise awareness among all library users and staff about the value of library materials, show what the consequences are of mistreating materials, and demonstrate how we can work together as a community to care for and preserve them.

This exhibit is a part of a larger national preservation week campaign spearheaded by the American Library Association, Pass It On, happening April 24 through April 30, 2011. During this campaign, libraries across the country will be participating and holding their own events to help connect library users with preservation tools and strategies.

The Student Chapter of SLA-ASIST hosts a presentation by Erenst Anip, who works in DNS in Hamilton library and is in the UHM MLIS program.

Erenst will talk about his internship this summer at the National University of Singapore Central Library.  Please join us Friday, September 10, at 12 noon in Hamilton 301.

In July 2010, Erenst went to Southeast Asia to be the LIS Program’s first intern at the National University of Singapore Central Library where he was introduced to the inner workings of a premier university library in Asia.  There, he learned about a different library system and organization.  In this informal talk story session, he will share his experience in ‘finding a missing librarian’/being a junior operative, the library’s outreach and social media initiatives, KPIs and PMS, and Singapore’s favorite past time of ‘makan’.

Erenst Anip is a 2nd year LIS student from Indonesia. As a future academic librarian, he focuses on digital technologies and social media features to enhance the library’s appeal to the users while keeping abreast of (Southeast) Asia area studies.  He is the project manager of Hawaii’s Digital Newspaper Project, part of Library of Congress’ National Digital Newspaper Project (NDNP), and he is the treasurer of SLA-ASIST SC.

University of Hawaii at Manoa SLA-ASIST Student Chapter presents a talk by LIS faculty Dr. Rich Gazan:

“Redesign as an Act of Violence: Changing Interaction Patterns in a Social Q&A Community”

Social Q&A communities are composed of people who enjoy seeking, discovering and sharing information in a Web environment.  These communities share many aspects of real communities: their members interact based on common interests, they create norms and mythologies, and they become accustomed to predictable patterns of interaction.  In this talk, I will discuss what happens when these patterns of interaction are disrupted in a case study of Answerbag, a social Q&A community that has undergone a recent fundamental redesign.  When the technical framework of Answerbag no longer allowed longtime members to connect with one another in the same ways, they used their information skills to push back against the designers, and to protest the violence they felt had been done to the community.

Essay Contest

Text Messaging in Libraries (Joseph Murphy, Yale University)

Joe is a graduate of the UH LIS program and is currently a General Science 
Librarian and Instruction Coordinator at Yale University. Joe has a vast amount 
of experience with incorporating Web 2.0 technologies into libraries and will 
share with us his personal experiences with text messaging at Yale.

This event is being sponsored by SLA-ASIST Student Chapter.

The event  features a talk by Dr. Rebecca Knuth, Professor of Library and Information Science at UHM, and author of Libricide: The Regime-Sponsored Destruction of Books and Libraries in the Twentieth Century, and Burning Books and Leveling Libraries: Extremist Violence and Cultural Destruction.  Dr. Knuth will speak in front of a symbolic bonfire.  There will also be a DJ with great music and dancing, a hunt, photo contest and other activities.  Attend in costume representing a banned/challenged book or author if you like; but this is not required.  Free costumes available on site.

On October 26 at 12 pm in POST-318B, Brendan Luyt will be presenting a talk entitled “Developing a Public Library System for Singapore in the 1950s and 1960s.”

Brendan Luyt is an Assistant Professor in the School of Communication & Information at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
