The Writing Center provides free tutoring to all UH students, faculty, and staff.  Tutors are graduate students in the English and Second Language Studies departments trained to assist students at any stage of the writing process, including brainstorming, planning, organizing, and revising. The Writing Center is located in the Commons in the Student Success Center, which is on the first floor of Sinclair Library. Tutoring sessions last for 30 minutes or 1 hour.

The Graduate Division has approved a dual master’s degree arrangement between the Library and Information Science (LIS) Program in the College of Natural Sciences and the Department of Educational Technology (ETEC) in the College of Education. Master’s candidates in both programs have expressed increasing interest in courses that allow them cross-disciplinary opportunities in information technology and library and information science. Faculties of both programs discussed the potential value of the arrangement and voted unanimously to pursue the initiative. The dual degree arrangement would allow students to double count a maximum of 9 credits. For more details, interested students should contact Dr. Catherine Fulford, ETEC Department, or Dr. Violet Harada, LIS Program.

I wanted to let you know of a few important things:

1a) ORAL EXAM ORIENTATION SESSION
Students graduating in Spring or Summer 2009 should prepare to take the oral exam during the spring semester.

The first step is to attend the ORAL EXAM ORIENTATION SESSION, which will be held on Friday, 16 January 2009 from 11am-Noon.  You are encouraged to review the questions on

including the downloads on the right side. You also should select dates you will be available for the exam.

1b) Special Notes for Neighbor Island Students:

Neighbor island students are welcome to attend the meeting

a) Review

2) IMPORTANT NOTE FROM THE GRADUATE DIVISION:

“Due to the increasing proportion of graduate students who miss the deadline for applying for graduation, we have encountered problems with our processing of degrees. Among these has been the need to burden many of you with the need to complete degree certifications very late in the term. To avoid this, we are going to become stricter in enforcing the deadline. Please let your students know that the deadline for spring graduation is Feb. 1. Up to that point, the application will be available on line, but after that students will be required to come to our office to complete it. Students who miss the deadline by more than three weeks will be required to submit a form signed by the graduate chair to indicate that they have your approval for such a late application. They will also be informed that their diploma and degree processing may be delayed.”

3) Note especially for Students completing in August:

If you plan to finish your courses in summer:

3a) As mentioned, we do not offer Oral Exams in Summer, so you must take your exam this Spring.
3b) Graduate Division will have another set of deadlines for Summer graduates (like the note above)
3c) I just wanted to remind you that UH Manoa stopped the summer commencement exercises.
You can attend either the May or the December ceremonies.
