LIS PROGRAM RECEIVES IMLS GRANT

The University of Hawaii’s Library and Information Science Program has received a National Leadership grant of $249,918 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for a project entitled, “Pathways to Excellence and Achievement in Research and Learning (PEARL).” Violet Harada, LIS professor, is the principal investigator. Co-investigators are Margit Watts, College of Education; Michael Brian Ogawa, College of Natural Sciences-Department of Information and Computer Sciences; Jodie Mattos, University of Hawaii Libraries; and Randy Hensley, Baruch College, New York.

The PEARL team will design and implement a training program for high school teachers and librarians to address “expectation gaps” between high school and post-high school pursuits. A training guide will be produced that focuses on the mastery of 21^st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, interpreting information, and analytic reasoning. The project will be cooperatively developed with the Hawaii Department of Education as part of the DOE’s Senior Project initiative.

IMLS is the primary source of federal funds for the nation’s museums and libraries. The National Leadership grant is considered the capstone program for IMLS, providing the agency’s highest level of support for innovative projects with national impact that create important research, tools, and models for library and museum programs across the country. Dr. Nahl’s LIS 677 to work on Second Life

Students in Dr. Diane Nahl’s LIS 677 class will be working in Second Life. SL users are welcome to visit the LIS Student Union, which is located on Infotainment Island, part of the Alliance Virtual Library System’s Info Archipelago. AVLS is hosting UH students and other that may participate from other LIS programs on this site. The class will design and develop its interior, surrounds, and information objects and resources. Students will develop 3-d information skills in this project.

Brett Bodemer publishes John Hedley In North China and Inner Mongolia

LIS Student Brett B. Bodemer publishes John Hedley In North China and Inner Mongolia (1897 - 1912). The book tells the history of a British missionary who witnessed the Yellow River Flood of 1898, the Boxer Rebellion, and the First Chinese Republic, and traveled extensively in Mongolia.

UH-LIS Alumni Betsy Young and Jane Kurahara Receive JACL Awards

Betsy Young and Jane Kurahara, retired school librarians, have been honored by the Honolulu chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League for their efforts to preserve Hawaii’s Japanese internment stories. They were presented with Distinguished Services Awards at the annual JACL luncheon this month. Young is a 1991 alumnus and Kurahara a 1970 alumnus of the University of Hawaii’s Library and Information Science Program.

As volunteers with the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii (JCCH), Kurahara and Young helped to uncover a former internment site in Honouliuli several years ago. They were also instrumental in compiling historical information on the World War II Hawaii internees’ experiences for high school students. Binders with this information have been distributed to every public high school in the state.

New Book on Project-Based Learning

Violet Harada, Carolyn Kirio, and Sandra Yamamoto have published Collaborating for Project-Based Learning in Grades 9-12. Harada is a professor in the Library and Information Science (LIS) Program, Department of Information and Computer Sciences. Kirio and Yamamoto, LIS alumni, are currently the cybrarians at Kapolei High School. Their high school was recognized as one of the 2006 National School Library Media Programs of the Year by the American Association of School Librarians and Follett Learning Resources.

The new text was published by Linworth Publishing, Inc., a national publisher of professional development resources for K-12 school professionals. While many texts have been published on project-based learning models, this is the first work that focuses on the high school librarian’s leadership role in the school improvement process.

Professor Gazan joins LIS

We are pleased to welcome Rich Gazan http://www2.hawaii.edu/~gazan/ to the LIS Program. Dr. Gazan is the second “dual-culture hire.” ICS Chair Martha Crosby explained that such positions build on the interdisciplinary ties between Library and Information Science and Computer Science. Professor Luz Marina Quiroga was the university’s first hire between LIS and CS. These symbolize the growing interdependence of the two units on campus.

Dr. Gazan is a familiar face to many on campus. Rich came to Hawaii to earn an MLIS in 1998 before pursuing a Ph.D. at UCLA. He has a rich experience teaching there and at the University of Denver and over several summers at the University of Hawaii.

Continuing Our Historic Ties with Asia and the Pacific

This fall, the UH LIS Program continued to develop on our historic ties with LIS scholars and practitioners in Asia and the Pacific. Professor Miwa, Kobayashi and Ms. Murase — faculty and staff from the Library & Information Science Department at Aichi Shukutoku University – briefly visited LIS as part of a study trip. The university, located near Nagoya, is one of a few graduate LIS schools in Japan. We discussed the possibility of developing an exchange program and other ways of cooperating.

The UH LIS Program has hosted scholars from the University of Tokyo and Doshisha University in recent years. Last year LIS student Jennifer McLaughlin

spent one semester at Kyoto University studying Library & Information Science. Later this fall, UH LIS Professor Asato will present a research paper at a special Doshisha University conference celebrating the long ties between Hawaii, the University of Hawaii, and Doshisha University. Other UH Manoa representatives will include System President McClain and LIS Chair Wertheimer.

LIS Dean Emeritus Miles Jackson Producing A Documentary

Our former Dean Miles M. Jackson has remained busy since retiring from UH in 1996. In 2005, he published They Followed the Trade Winds: African Americans in Hawaii (University of Hawaii Press), and he now is producing an exciting documentary on the topic titled, “Holding Fast the Dream: Hawaii’s African American Experience.” Dr. Jackson expects it to be shown on PBS Hawaii next February.
