Beta Phi Mu Scholarship Available

BIG ISLAND SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The Friends of the Library Kona (F.O.L.K.S.) awarded scholarships ranging from $500 to $1000 to Big Island students pursuing their degree in the LIS Program. Congratulations to Joy Holland, Mara Paio, and Annemarie Aweau, who were the recipients.

LIS Students Receive Japanese Government Scholarships

This year a second group of students will participate in the exchange program between the UH LIS Program and the University of Tsukuba. The following five students were selected to receive $1,000 scholarships from the Japanese government to help participate in the program.

These LIS students will observe major libraries and archives in Japan, including the National Diet Library, National Archives, Tokyo Metropolitan Library in December 2011. They will also give presentations to Tsukuba students and faculty.

In October, we hosted LIS student Yukako Mizukami, and Dr. Chieko Mizoue, Graduate Chair of the School of Library & Media Studies at the University of Tsukuba. Sending the five students to Tsukuba is part of our cultural and academic exchange initiative.

The University of Tsukuba is Japan’s largest LIS Program in a national university. At one time it was the National University of Library and Information Science before merging with the University of Tsukuba, which is one of Japan’s leading scientific research institutions.

In fall of 2012, Dr. Andrew Wertheimer will be a visiting researcher /professor at the University of Tsukuba. We hope this further develops this partnership between our programs.

Achievement Scholarships Awarded for Spring 2012

Congratulations to the following students, who will be receiving UH Achievement Scholarships in the spring. This competitive scholarship is based on merit, service, and academic achievement. To be eligible, a student must be a degree-seeking student in a master’s or doctoral program and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above. The award is open to both residents and non-residents.

UH LIS Scholarships: Achievement Awards

The LIS Program is able to provide two types of Achievement Awards. These used to be known as “Tuition Waivers” and “Pacific Asian Scholarships.” The requirements and application forms are at our website: http://www.hawaii.edu/lis/students.php?page=scholarshipsThe LIS Office must receive completed applications by April 15th for the Fall. SLA 2009 Travel Scholarship: Sparks Award for Professional Development

2009 Marion E. Sparks Award for Professional Development

The Chemistry Division of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) is sponsoring a student/new member travel award to defray the costs of attending the 2009 SLA Annual Meeting June 14-17 in Washington, D.C. The award is intended to encourage the professional development of student members and new members of the Chemistry Division and encourage their participation in Chemistry Division activities.

TRAVEL AWARD: $1,500 stipend to attend the 2009 SLA Annual Conference. The winner will also receive a certificate of achievement and will be introduced at the Chemistry Division Business Meeting & Breakfast.

ELIGIBILITY: All student members of the Chemistry Division and all new members of the Chemistry Division (individuals who have joined since January 2008) are eligible. All applicants must have joined the Chemistry Division by February 23, 2009. See below for how to join.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Please submit the following:

-A brief essay that: a) clearly articulates your objectives for professional development; and b) indicates

what you hope to gain from attending the SLA Annual Meeting. Maximum length: 2 pages.

-Resume

-Names of two references.

-Brief budget (expected expenses for registration, airfare, lodging, food and/or continuing education course).

Registration in a Chemistry Division or other Continuing Education (CE) course is recommended, but not required.

DEADLINE: All applications must be received by March 9, 2009. The winner will be notified by March 27, 2009. Essays will be judged by the SLA Chemistry Division Awards Committee.

HISTORY: The award is named to honor Marion E. Sparks, a chemistry librarian at the University of Illinois from 1913 until her death in 1929. Ms. Sparks contributed a great deal to the field of chemical information, her achievements include teaching courses on chemical information, and authoring and publishing what is argued to be the first book to formally address chemical literature and library instruction.

Music Library Summer Internship Opportunities

Music Library: Ensemble Librarian Intern, 7 positions: (7 week stipend $1,175 includes room and board)

Priority consideration given to completed applications submitted before February 28, 2009.

Duties may include distributing music for large performing groups, photocopying, marking string parts, repairing and filing music. Attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced deadline driven environment are musts. Program requires a 3 day learning intensive covering the basics of performing ensemble librarianship. Each ensemble librarian will be responsible for all music preparation and distribution for their assigned ensembles and must participate in a team environment. Must be able to lift and transport boxes on wheeled carts across campus. Music background is necessary and bachelor’s degree preferred.

Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship
