Tara Otomo and Cynthia Mitchem are the 2011 recipients of the Robert and Rita Blair Memorial Award. The LIS faculty presents this award of $250 to graduating students who have demonstrated leadership promise in the field of library service to children and youth.
Tara seeks to become a school librarian. She did a practicum at King Intermediate and has been working as a library assistant at Stevenson Middle School. She has also been a reading teacher. Tara served as the student representative on the Executive Board of the Hawaii Association of School Librarians. She also served on the LIS Curriculum Committee.
Cynthia wants to work as a public librarian. She has worked at Hamilton Library and at Western Washington University. Her career goal is to ignite a passion in reading among young children.
Tamara Martinez is the 2011 recipient of a $500 scholarship from the Hawaii Association of School Librarians. Tamara is considering a career in school or public librarianship. She is currently employed as a Family Literacy Program Manager for the Hawaii Literacy initiative. She has also been active in campus life serving as one of the student representatives on the LIS Curriculum Committee.
