UH Received Full Accreditation!

January 28, 2009 on 8:27 pm | In Congratulations |

loha LIS students,We are very pleased to announce that we just received the attached e-mail from the ALA Committee on Accreditation (COA). COA gave us the full six-year accreditation. This is the highest recognition that COA can give, showing a school meets standards in all areas. In the last few years over 10 percent of LIS schools have received conditional accreditation or were not accredited. We were especially pleased that COA recognized “the resiliency and responsiveness of the program and community in the face of natural disaster and the challenges that followed.” Related to that, I might add that we now expect to start moving back to Hamilton Library this December. The Committee also reported that they are interested in observing how we will continue to address technological change in the curriculum. As some of you know, the LIS Program is already engaged in strategic planning our future. We will be contacting you various ways in the coming semesters as we continue to modify the program to best meet present and future needs. We also welcome your participation in Curriculum committee or faculty meetings. My main reason to write you was to thank you for all that you’ve done. The COA External Review Panel members were impressed by your intelligence, creativity, and professionalism. We on the faculty thank you for taking the time to do all the extra things that make LIS such a wonderful learning environment. I also want to thank you for taking extra time to respond to questionnaires, surveys, meet ERP members, and share student work. These allowed us to provide evidence of your learning outcomes. If you are interested, our entire report is online at:http://www.hawaii.edu/lis/about.php?page=accreditationToday though, we definitely should celebrate this major accomplishment. Tomorrow, the hard work resumes about continuing to shape an LIS Program that best serves you. Once again, the faculty and staff sincerely thank you for all of you have done. Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions Sincerely,Andrew Wertheimer and Violet Harada

  1. Congratulations and thank you for your hard work and effort! The rigors and detail that are required for accreditation is earned though leadership, dedication and perseverance in addressing deficits as well as potential in any program.

We appreciated the ability for Neighbor Island students to discuss the quality of our education to COA External Review members. As a Distance Learning student on Maui, the opportunity to receive a high level of education extended through HITS is personally and professionally gratifying.
