Congratulations to two newly certified school librarians: Diane Mokuau and Geri Kimoto. Diane is a graduate of the UHM LIS Program; Geri studied at the UCLA graduate school. In addition, six librarians, also graduates of the UHM LIS Program, received renewals on their National Board Certification. They are: Rena Arakawa, Loraine Hotoke, Carolyn Kirio, Sandra Maruyama, Julie Tomomitsu, and Anne Torige.
National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential that complements, and does not replace, a state’s teacher license. It is available nationwide for most preK–12 teachers. The review process is a rigorous one that requires candidates to complete ten different assessments that are reviewed by trained teachers in their certificate areas. The assessments include four portfolio entries focusing on teaching practice and six constructed response exercises that assess content knowledge.
