The Department of Information and Computer Sciences has an
opening for a graduate research assistantship beginning January
208. Candidates must be enrolled in a UH Manoa graduate program
at that time. The successful candidate will provide online
community management services for Hawai`i Networked Learning
Communities (HNLC). The position is presently funded by the
Hawai`i Department of Education. Compensation for this half time
(20 hours/week) position includes pay at the standard graduate
student rate and a tuition waiver. For more information about

Duties may include the following: Handle account requests and
create workspaces as needed.  Edit content (stories and unit
plans) for publication.  Solicit and/or write news stories and
post these to the community web site.  Identify educational
content relevant to Hawai`i teachers (lesson plans, unit plans,
and other resources), and enter descriptions of these in a
resource database.  Seek out partners that have appropriate
resources, recruiting their membership in, and
facilitating their posting of services and resources. Conduct or
assist in conducting teacher training workshops on the use of

Minimum qualifications include English skills (speaking,
listening, writing and editing); ability to work effectively with
teachers and other DOE staff; ability to conduct training
workshops; familiarity with common office software and
communications software; and willingness to be trained on using
new software interfaces. Desirable qualifications include web
editing experience, experience working with educators, flexible
schedule, and/or interest in studying online communities.
Training in the use of and associated tools will be
provided as needed.
