1999 Alumnus/Alumna of the Year

Kenneth Roy Herrick

The 1999 Alumnus/Alumna of the Year is Kenneth Roy Herrick. Dr. Miles M. Jackson presented the award at the Annual Alumni Brunch on July 18, 1999. In his presentation, Dr. Jackson noted that Mr. Herrick "is an outstanding academic leader and a librarian with great vision. Through the years he has brought new ideas to management and a willingness to experiment."

Mr. Herrick has served as Director of Libraries at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo since 1976. He was previously Assistant Director of Libraries at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

During his tenure at UH-Hilo, the library's collection has grown from 67,000 volumes to 255,000. In addition, the library moved into a new building, which allowed for expansion of the collection and the introduction of new technologies.

Mr. Herrick has been active in many professional associations. He has served as a member of the American Library Association Council, President of the Hawai`i Library Association, and has held many other positions in professional organizations. In addition, he is the co-author of the Hawai`i Island Newspaper Index.

The LIS Alumni Group offers its congratulations to Mr. Herrick for being selected 1999 Alumnus/Alumna of the Year.
