Sylvia Mitchell is the current branch manager of the Liliha Public Library in Honolulu. She is well-known as an advocate for Hawai`i's public libraries. In addition, Ms. Mitchell has worked hard to improve her library's offerings for children and has obtained a grant to maintain the collection of Chinese materials.
Ms. Mitchell has received many awards and acknowledgements, including being featured in an ALA recruitment brochure, receiving an honor from the Volunteer Recognition Program of the Department of Education Library Services, and she has served as the President of the Library Association of Hawai`i. Her award was presented at the 2000 Alumni Reunion on O`ahu.
The second awardee is Constance Pirtle, the Assistant Regional Librarian at the Wisconsin Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped of the Milwaukee Public Library System. She was recognized for her 30+ years of service on behalf of the blind and physically disabled. Ms. Pirtle has been very active in local and national professional organizations. She is a founding member of the Wisconsin Black Librarian Network and has served as Vice President. She has also presented papers at professional conferences among her many contributions to the profession. The award was announced at the alumni reunion at the 2000 ALA Annual Conference.
