A team of students from Kalani High undertook a fascinating study of the Gale Crater, an impact crater on Mars. Senior Riley Kishaba, juniors Lee Danielle Young, and Liana Michelle Young, and sophomore Andrew Segawa joined forces to train on the ENVI Program and learn how to create topographic images of Mars. They wanted to find evidence that water existed on Mars in the past.

Senior projects can be the perfect opportunity to discover if your chosen career path is the right one for you. Ask Mark Andrew Buenafe, a McKinley senior, who decided to focus his project on studying the world of graphic design. He spent 11 weeks observing and interacting with professionals at the Design Asylum. Going after school every day, Mark interviewed a team of graphic designers about the job outlook as well as current and future trends in this field. He researched statistics and demographics of designers, who work as freelance agents as well as those individuals, who work for design firms.
When Chasity-Mae Real, a Moanalua senior, decided to choose a senior project, she wanted something with genuine community impact. She realized that more than 90% of Hawaii’s food has to be imported and she was concerned about how vulnerable Hawaii’s citizens are during strikes and disasters. She decided to study the challenges we face in supporting local food businesses and the benefits we might reap as consumers.
Haley Addison’s interest in helping young adults become financially literate led her to focus on a specific and timely need: to make them aware of the real dangers of identity theft. The Moanalua High School senior created a lesson on identity theft that could be taught through the senior CAP (Career and Academic Plan) classes at her school. She also designed a smartphone app on this topic to reach a wider audience.
Who better to create a new classroom design than a student? Jessica Kim, a Moanalua senior, has always been interested in the relationship between education and design. She decided to harness her interests in a senior project that she titled, “Redesigning the Classroom.” To create an environment conducive to learning, she co-founded The Canvas, a students-for-students coworking space in Kalihi where she could design and construct her project.
