Locally Administered Scholarships

LIS Achievement Scholarship ($500+) (clicking this link opens a word DOC)

A limited number of achievement scholarships are available to qualified graduate students at UHM. To be eligible, a student must be a degree-seeking student in a master’s or doctoral program and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above. Students who have graduate assistantships or teaching assistantships cannot apply for this scholarship.

The award amount varies, depending on the graduate program. Minimum award is $500. Awards are applicable towards the regular cost of attendance not Outreach College tuition.

Award recipients must maintain an enrollment of six credits or more of degree-related courses and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above, for the entire period of the award. Recipients will be liable to reimburse UHM for the full amount of the award, if they fail to meet the award conditions or if for any other reason the award becomes invalid.

Deadline for applying:
1. Fall semester: submit by April 1
2. Spring semester: submit by October 1

Friends of the Hilo Library Scholarship ($1000)

The Friends of the Hilo Library Scholarship is based on financial need as well as past academic performance and accomplishments. Students must be classified graduate students in the Library and Information Science Program. They must be currently enrolled for a minimum of three LIS credits. They must be residents of the Big Island.

Deadline for applying: The current deadline will be announced via the LIS listserv.

Lucille Adams Brown Memorial Scholarship ($2000 total) (clicking this link opens a word DOC)
The University of Hawaii Library and Information Science Program is taking applications for a new scholarship. Awards ($2,000 per year in total) from the Lucille Adams Brown Memorial Scholarship may be applied to support partial tuition, books, and/or fees. Awards are based on some degree of financial need (not necessarily as determined by federal guidelines) and academic merit. Students must be officially enrolled in the LIS Program and taking at least eight units (full time) in the semester they apply for the award. Entering and continuing students are eligible.

Beta Phi Mu - Xi Chapter Scholarship ($250)
Requirements: 3.85 GPA, completion of 21 credits in LIS. Must submit transcript, cover letter and two letters of recommendation to: Beta Phi Mu Scholarship Committee, c/o Carole Suzui, Federal Documents, Hawai'i State Library, 478 S. King Street, Honolulu, HI 96813.

Ralph R. Shaw Memorial Award (Up to $500)
Continuing education support available to all professional levels, including paraprofessionals. Required: 2 letters of recommendation, 1 page goals statement. See website for application form. LIS Alumni Group Student Award (Up to $500)

Mary Edward Professional Award (Up to $500)
Provides up to $500 for Hawaii librarians, UH LIS graduates, and students in the Advanced Certificate program to further their professional goals. Can be used for travel and publication support. H.W. Wilson Scholarship (clicking this link opens a word DOC)
The H.W. Wilson Scholarship Fund has granted the University of Hawaii Library and Information Science Program funding for scholarships for Fall 2008. Award is based on prior academic performance and accomplishments. The awards are open to students taking at least eight (8) graduate credits in Fall 2008. The scholarship will be awarded in late September 2008, after confirmation of registration status.

Maui Friends of the Library Scholarship (Amount varies) (clicking this link opens a word DOC)
The Maui Friends of the Library has allocated $2,000 this year for scholarship(s) for Maui County resident(s) who are classified students in the University of Hawaii Library and Information Science Program. The student(s) must be a resident of Maui County (including Lanai and Molokai), attending school full-time, and in qualify for financial need.

Nationally Administered Scholarships

American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Scholarships (varying amounts from $1000-$3500)
The American Association of Law Libraries is committed to providing opportunities for professional growth. Each year, the Association awards scholarships in significant amounts to assist individuals in achieving their goal of becoming a law librarian. Students with any combination of Law degree, Library degree, or students seeking either degree may apply. Minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.

American Library Association (ALA) Scholarships (varying amounts from $3000-$6500)
The ALA and its units provide more than $300,000 annually for study in a master's degree in library and information studies from an ALA accredited program, or for a master's degree in school library media program. The scholarship process is open annually from October - March. It is only necessary to complete ONE online application regardless of the number of scholarships you apply for. Students of Color (American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander) are especially encouraged to check out the Spectrum Scholarship. http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/diversity/spectrum/spectrum.cfm

Beta Phi Mu Scholarships (varying amounts from $1250-$3,000)
Five scholarships and the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship are awarded annually by Beta Phi Mu. Applications for all scholarships and fellowships are accepted beginning November 15.

Catholic Library Association Scholarships (varying amounts from $1500)
The Catholic Library Association provides two scholarships: one for for graduate study toward a Master's Degree in Library Science, and one for continuing education in school or children's librarianship. See the website for more details.

Chinese American Librarians Association Scholarships (varying amounts from $200-$1000)
Applicants must be of Chinese nationality or of Chinese descent and should be currently enrolled in ALA-accredited master's programs or in doctoral programs in Library and Information Science in degree-granting institutions in North America. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student at the time the Scholarship is awarded.

Medical Lib Association (MLA) Scholarship ($2,000)
A scholarship for up to $5,000 will be granted to a student who is entering an ALA-accredited library school or who has yet to finish at least one half of the program's requirements in the year following the granting of the scholarship. More Information

Medical Library Assocation Scholarship for Minority Student ($2,000)
A scholarship for up to $5,000 will be granted to a minority student who is entering an ALA-accredited library school or has yet to finish at least one half of the program's requirements in the year following the granting of the scholarship. African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, or Pacific Islander American individuals who wish to study health sciences librarianship are eligible. More Information

REFORMA Scholarship - National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking ($1500)
Any current or newly entering graduate library school student [M.L.S. or Ph.D.] may apply for this scholarships. Must provide proof of enrollment to an accredited library school. Open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States who are Spanish-speakers. Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of and desire to serve the Spanish- speaking community.

Special Libraries Association Scholarships ($6,000)
Awards for graduate study leading to a Master's Degree, graduate study leading to a Ph.D., and for post-M.L.S. study. One general award, and one minority award.

International Federations of Library Associations and Institutions International Scholarships (variable - for study/work abroad)
Middle level professionals and technical specialists (computing staff) working in libraries in libraries/information centres in Asia and Oceania may apply. The candidates must be less than 46 years old. They must have an undergraduate degree and basic IT Skills. The scholarship will enable the recipient to gain experience and hands-on exposure in a professionally advanced environment at a recognized institution in Asia and Oceania. The scholarship period will not exceed six weeks.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarshipa (variable: $10,000-$23,000)
A student who has completed two years of undergraduate study and who has an Operational Rotary Club in his/her country may be eligible for a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship for study abroad. Deadline: Spring/Summmer - contact your local Rotary district for more information.

CLIR Annual Scholarship
The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) offers an annual scholarship for a student of library information science to attend the yearly meeting of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). This may open some doors to other resources via participation in IFLA.
