SPRING 2008 ITALIAN FILM SCHEDULE
Circumventing social criticism and commedia all’italiana, five films talk about
ageless friendship bonds Italian style: love, illusions, bittersweet laughters and idle
pranks in a continuous strife to prolong childhood during the adult life.
All Movies are in Italian with English subtitles; St. John 11 at 3:00 selected Thursdays, beginning 7 February.
Thursday February 7, 3:00pm
I Vitelloni (1953, 104min)
Dir. by Federico Fellini
Five adolescent loafers in the Adriatic city of Rimini postpone adulthood by idling in
their home town. Fellini’s elegy to the passage of youth reveals true insights through
the characters of the likeable boys, one of whom depends on his sister while another
is a careless womanizer.

Thursday February 28, 3:00pm
I Soliti Ignoti (Big Deal on Madonna Street, 1958, 106min)
Dir. by Mario Monicelli
A classic account of the misadventures of a group of amateurish crooks. Its title
translates as “the usual unknown persons”, a bureaucratic phrase for unidentified
criminals. A collection of small time hoods gather to rob a pawn shop. Along the
way, everything that could go wrong does so in pretty hilarious fashion.

Thursday March 13, 3:00pm
I Soliti Ignoti Vent’anni Dopo (Big Deal on Madonna Street Twenty Years Later 1987, 99min)
Dir. by Amanzio Todini
Twenty years after their first "big deal" landed them in jail, the original gang is back in action. Peppe "The Panther" (Gassman) has a new job lined up to make them rich but his pal Tiberio (Mastroianni) is determined not have anything to do with it. In a series of bad breaks and mishaps, they get a run of luck that just about puts them in the clear to enjoy the lives they have only dreamed about.

Thursday April 10, 3:00pm
C’eravamo Tanto Amati (We All Loved Each Other So Much, 1974,
124min)
Dir. by Ettore Scola
The film follows the progress of a generation, personified in three wartime buddies
who drift apart and then briefly converge again. There is failure, heartbreak, regret,
but the message seems to be that love -and friendship- conquer all. A careful
insight into the affective world of three idealist friends, the changes produced by
life, and their useless efforts trying ‘to freeze’ the time

Crêpe Recipe
2 cups flour, 3 cups milk, 4 large eggs, and 1 Tbl. melted butter
(plus, optional: some grated orange peel or 1 Tbl Calvados, Cointreau,
or Grand-Marnier)
Mix the ingredients together in a large bowl. (It's easiest to
put them in a blender and blend on high for a couple of minutes,
however if you don't have a blender you can mix them by hand).
Get a teflon-coated frying pan, if possible. If you have a normal
pan, have some melted butter in a cup near you and each time before
putting the batter in the pan, butter the pan with a paper towel
dipped in the melted butter.
When you are ready to make the crêpes, heat the pan to a
medium high temperature. Then, with a ladle, dip into the batter
and fill the ladle about 1/2 to 2/3 full (you'll be able to judge
after making your first one). Pour the batter slowly into the
hot pan with your right hand. With your left hand, while pouring,
move the pan so that the batter travels evenly in order to cover
the bottom of the pan producing a THIN coat. It can go up the
sides of the pan slightly. One the batter is in, leave it on to
cook until you see some bubbling and the sides start detaching
from the edge of the pan (not always though, use your own judgement).
With a spatula, slightly try to detach the edges of the crêpe
from the pan using the spatula all around. To make sure the crêpe
is not sticking, shake the pan to see if the crêpe moves.
Then, very delicately turn the crêpe over. Let the other
side cook (1 to 2 minutes). Then, place the cooked crêpe
on a piece of waxed paper on a plate and put another sheet of
waxed paper on top. Repeat the process for each crêpe. There
should be a sheet of waxed paper in between each crêpe so
that they won't stick together. When finished, cover the stack
with a large piece of aluminum foil, folding it under the plate.
Don't put the crêpes in the refrigerator: the crêpes
will harden!
You can fill the crêpes with any combination of sliced fruit,
jam, whipped cream, powered sugar, Nutella or other chocolate
gooey stuff. Bon appétit!
Pétanque:
Pétanque is an outdoor bowling game, originated in France
and evolved from ancient Greek and Roman games. It is played on
any small area of bare ground.
The game starts when the first player tosses a small wooden target
ball a distance of 6 to 10 meters. He then follows up by throwing
a "boule" to come as close as he can to the target ball.
The "boule" is about the size of a baseball and weights
about a pound and a half.
The other side (team or individual) then has a chance to try to
come closer, throwing from the same point. The round ends when
all players have thrown all their "boules" (2 or 3 per
player, the rule being no more than 12 boules total in the game).
Thewinner of the round gets one point for every ball that he,
or his team, have gotten closer to the target than any balls of
the opponent.
Play continues in suddessive rounds until one side accumulates
the prearranged game score, most usually 13. It is legal to puch
or shoot an opponent's bould that is in your way by hitting it
with one of your own ("tirer" in French).
The starting team is decided by the toss of a coin. One member
of the first team chooses the starting place and draws a circle
on the ground about 15-20 inches in diameter in which to stand.
Both feet of the thrower MUST remain inside the circle UNTIL THE
BOULE LANDS.
The first player throws the jack ("cochonnet", a wooden
ball 1-1/4" in diameter) between 18 and 35 feet away and
not nearer than 20 inches from any obstacle (wall, tree, etc.)
He then throws his first bould, trying to place it as near as
possible to the jack. A player on ther other team then comes into
the circle and tries to throw his boule nearer to the jack.
Then it is up to a player in the team not leading to throw until
his team gets a leading boule by placing it closer or hitting
away the bould which "keeps the mark". He may also remove
the jack in the same way, but the jack must remain visible from
the circle--unless it lies behind a boule.
When a team has no more boules, the players of the other team(s)
throw theirs and try to place them as close as possible to the
jack. When all the teams have no more boules, the points are counted
until game is reached by one of the teams.
A player of the winning team throws the jack from where it is,
and the game starts again until one team reaches the 13 points
again. ETC.
