The Losey Lab Research: Using UV
Myripristis berndti, a common Hawaiian soldierfish shown below, looks much like other species in the same genus to our eye: all are silvery red with a single bar behind the gill cover. However, in the UV, M. berndti acquires a second post-orbital bar which appears at 380 nm. Could this feature distinguish them from congeners, or differ between individuals? Research continues on this front...
