The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Hawaiʻi Natural Energy Institute has been awarded approximately $1 million a year for up to five years to conduct research and develop technologies that harness the power of waves and ocean thermal energy conversion.

The award, which is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s implementation of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, establishes HNEI as one of two National Marine Renewable Energy Centers in the nation.
