The University of Hawaiʻ at Hilo dedicated its 22,600-square-foot Student Life Center with a low-key ceremony in 2008. University photographer R. David Beales visited the new building and brought back these photographs.
The energy-efficient facility provides athletic facilities and programs along with a juice bar, classrooms and a large common area.
On average, 600 people enter the center per day. On its busiest single day, 1,044 people passed through the doors—more than a fourth of the entire student body.
Student fees of $78 per semester and faculty/staff and alumni memberships help fund operations.
Director Timothy Moore oversees the center. He came from Southern Methodist University with 17 years of experience in college recreational sports administration.
