Close up with ocean critters

What better way to learn what happens under the surface of the ocean than to get in the water and take a look?
University photographer R. David Beales did just that, meeting a group at the Waikīkī Aquarium for an excursion called The Reef at Night.
A daytime version of the Reef at Night program—called Tidepool Exploration—is offered in summer, because of safety concerns related to ocean conditions on the south shore.
Upcoming Tidepool Explorations dates and locations:
- Sat., Apr. 25, 8:00-10:30 a.m. Makapuʻu
- Sat., May 9, 8:00-10:30 a.m. Kewalo
- Sun., June 7, 8:00-10:30 a.m. Kewalo
In addition, the Waikīkī Aquarium has a full calendar of fun, educational events for families, teens and adults.
Most programs do fill up so reservations should be made well in advance. For more information email Karen Izumi or call (808)440-9011.
