The UH Manoa School of Communication was the pioneer in Second Life. The visionary leadership of then Chair Gerald Kato secured funding for a presence in Second Life in 2006. I was bringing UH Manoa School of Communication students into Second Life in Spring 2007, in several classes including Organizational Communication (COM 320). That funding was terminated later in 2007 on a change in school leadership, but there were nearly 100 students introduced to Second Life and other virtual world and augmented reality possibilities many years ago already.

I remember introducing evangelist Sam Joseph to the technology in the Fall of 2006. It was amazing how no one was interested but now they have hopped on the bandwagon, well after the pioneering research has been done. The same courses in the School of Communication have introduced students to Twitter years before it became a phenomenon. Look to graduate students and the classes they teach for innovation in the curriculum. Funny how they are forgotten when the chronicling begins.
