University of Hawaiʻi Alumni Association President Douglas Inouye presented the 2010 UHAA Outstanding Community Service Award to radio station ESPN 1420AM at the Warriors homecoming football game on Oct. 30, 2010.
ESPN 1420AM personality Chris Hart accepted the recognition on the field during halftime for ESPN’s dedicated service and continued support to the University of Hawaiʻi.
“ESPN 1420 consistently goes above and beyond in their support for UH,” says Janet Yoshida Bullard ’82, executive director of UHAA. In addition to its monetary sponsorship, the station frequently provides free air time and on-air personalities at many events at no cost. “They always push up their sleeves and work very hard to support UH,” says Bullard, “and at no financial gain to themselves.”
UHAA presented its 2010 Chapter of the Year Award to UHAA–San Francisco Bay Area at the Fresno State tailgate on Oct. 9, 2010 in Fresno, Calif. The award honors a chapter for its membership growth, improved programming, increased level of chapter engagement and giving back to support UH and its students.
During 2010, the UHAA–San Francisco Bay Area chapter established a scholarship for a student from the Bay Area to attend UH and held its first-ever summer student sendoff and luau.
UHAA’s 2010 Partner of the Year Award was presented to GEICO on Aug. 28, 2010 during UHAA Day at Windward Mall. For two years, GEICO has provided UH alumni discounts on auto insurance, sponsored the UHAA website and sponsored a student bus for the Homecoming football game.
GEICO has also been a great supporter at UHAA football tailgates, including mainland tailgates at Washington State in 2009 and at West Point and Colorado in 2010.
