Cheryl Ernst, Editor

A former journalist, Cheryl Ernst joined UH in 1987 and worked in media relations and publication services before being named director of creative services and editor of Mālamalama. She received a BA summa cum laude in communications from the University of Washington in 1978 and is a student of hula.

Rowen Tabusa, Art Director

The award-winning designer and art director for Mālamalama joined the UH design staff in 1990. He previously worked for Hawaiʻi Sugar Planters private graphics firms. He received a BFA in art from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 1979.

R. David Beales, Photographer

R. David Beales is the photographer for Mālamalama and the University of Hawaiʻi System. He previously worked for Monmouth University in New Jersey where he recently completed his MA in history.

Tracy Matsushima, Associate Editor

As associate editor, Tracy Matsushima copyedits and writes for Mālamalama. She is also the editor of the university’s online newsletter, News@UH. A graduate of UH Mānoa (BA in English and journalism, ’90), she has worked at UH since 1999.

Jeela Ongley, Online Editor

Jeela Ongley is a writer and web content coordinator for Mālamalama and the University of Hawaiʻi System. She is a graduate of the UH Mānoa journalism program and a master’s candidate in English.

Stacia Garlach, Alumni Editor

Stacia Garlach compiles alumni content and class notes for Mālamalama. She is director of marketing and communication for the UH Foundation Office of Alumni Relations. Originally from Kansas, she earned two communication degrees from Wichita State University – a BA in ‘97 and an MA in ‘03
