There are several different academic credentials: degrees and certificates, that may be considered in the category of new programs. For details on each of these, refer to CHANCELLOR FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES MEMO CCCM# 6004 (February 1, 2002)

The first category includes the Certificate of Competence (Cert.Co.): 1-9 credits and the Certificate of Completion (C.C.): 10-23 credits. The Chancellor may approve these credentials at the campus level. Proceed to #1. below.

The second category includes the Certificate of Achievement (C.A.): 24-45 credits, the Associate in Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.): at least 60 credits, and the Associate in Science Degree (A.S.): at least 60 credits. Authorization to plan these credentils must be granted by the University of Hawai`i Board of Reagents (BOR.) The Curriculum Committee requests that thay be consulted and allowed to review the document titled Authorization to Plan a New Academic Program (ATP) before the plan is submitted to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. For instructiions, refer to CHANCELLOR FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES MEMO CCCM# 6000 (December 9, 1982) An ATP is a request to plan a new academic program that is made at the beginning of the formal program planning process before major resources are committed to the program planning. The viability of the ATP is limited to two years. The purposes of the ATP are to provide the campus and unit administrators with the opportunity to monitor, coordinate, decide upon, and provide appropriate support for academic planning; to alert system administrators of new academic programs under consideration within the University, provide them with an opportunity for coordination across campuses and for appropriate preliminary input; and to inform the BOR of long-term academic program planning intentions and to provide opportunities for feedback. Once the BOR has approved the ATP, the Submission of a New Program Proposal must be prepared. For instructions, refer to CHANCELLOR FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES MEMO CCCM# 6001 (December 9, 1982)

Other credentials include the Associate in Technical Studies Degree (A.T.S.): at least 60 credits, which is a customized degree using courses from two or more existing approved programs. For instructions, refer to CHANCELLOR FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES MEMO CCCM# 6005 (March 18, 1996)

MCC also awards an Associate in Arts Degree (A.A.) in the Liberal Arts Program and a Bachelor of Applied Sciences (B.A.S.) Degree in Applied Sciences & Information Technology (ABIT.) Special ad hoc committees are convened to consider major modifications to these programs before submission to the Curriculum Committee.

1. Print out a copy of the Curriculum Proposal Cover Sheet - Program/Degree/Certificate. Follow the steps and indicate the date of completion.

2. Fill out a Curriculum Action Request (CAR) Form - Programs, Degrees, and Certificates. Be sure to sign the CAR Signature Page.

3. Prepare the program description, requirements, course sequence, and, if necessary, an Authorization to Plan a New Program.

4. Consult with your Academic Subject Area Representative listed on the Curriculum Committee Home Page. Have her/him review the documents and sign the the CAR Signature Page

5. Notify your Department Chair to schedule the proposal for discussion at the next department meeting. When the proposal is approved by the department, have the Chair sign the CAR Signature Page.

6. Submit a complete, signed, hardcopy set of the proposal documents to the Curriculum Committee Chair and email attachments of the CAR form and the program map to the Chair to be posted to the Curriculum Committee web page.  Once any suggestions for corrections and improvement have been implemented, the Curriculum Committee will act on the proposal.
