Educational Options> Off-Island
Post-secondary educational options off the island of Maui include statewide, national, and international institutions. These can be public or private, two-year or four-year, or two-year technical institutions.

Researching the institutions, their majors, locations, admissions policies, housing, and their costs will give you real data to evaluate the costs and benefits of attending an institution. A four-year education can be costly when you factor in room and board, transportaton and tuition.

Statewide Institutions > Public
Maui Community College is part of the state-supported, ten-campus University of Hawai‘i system. There are seven community colleges and three universities located throughout the state. The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, a Carnegie I research instutution and the largest university in the state of Hawaii‘i, is located in Honolulu along with Honolulu, Leeward, Kapiolani and Windward Community Colleges and the University of Hawai‘i - West Oahu.

The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo and Hawaii Community College are located in Hilo on the Big Island, while Kauai Community College is located on Kauai. As publically-supported institutions, all UH campuses offer resident and non-resident tuition. Resident tuition is subsidized by Hawai‘i taxpayers, so student pay approximately 20% of the actual cost of instruction.

Statewide Institutions> Private
The majority of the state's population resides on the island of Oahu which also has the largest number of post-secondary educational institutions. The larger private, four-year institutions include Chaminade University, Hawaii Paciific University, Brigham Young University, and Argosy University.

Familiar two-year institutions include Heald Business College, Hollywood Beauty College, Travel Insitute of the Pacific, to mention just a few. But, there are just as many non-traditional institutions as well.

National Institutions
There are thousands of other post-secondary educational options available nationally and internationally. Again, state-supported public institutions have two tuition tiers – resident and non-resident. The non-resident tuition is often up to 5 times the cost of resident tuition.

There is a consortium of western states, that includes Hawaii but excludes California, that participate in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program. The agreement reduces the out-of-state resident tuition to eligible students in participating states to resident plus one-half. Some colleges have restrictions on the programs or number of students they accept on WUE exchange.
