Getting started at MCC > An enrollment checklist
Maui Community College has an open enrollment policy and accepts all adults 18 years and older without requiring a high school diploma or GED. An Early Admission program is available to high school juniors and seniors who wish to take college courses during the summer, fall, or spring semesters of their junior or senior years. Running Start is a statewide program that allows academically qualified juniors and seniors to enroll in college classes through the University of Hawai‘i system as a part of their high school coursework.

Please note: The federal financial aid program requires a high school diploma, GED, or acceptable scores on an Ability to Benefit test for eligibility.

There are several steps involved in enrolling in classes at MCC. If you need more information or help completing the college or financial aid applications, call the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) at 984-3286.

STEP 1:  APPLYING TO COLLEGE

1.
Admission to college:  Pick-up and complete the University of Hawai`i System Application paper form or download the application. Submit in person, by mail, or by fax to Admissions & Records Office, Ho`okipa Building, 310 W. Ka`ahumanu Avenue, Kahului, HI 96732.  (984-3267, fax 242-9618). Don’t forget to put down your campus, major, and degree. If you have questions, or if you need help selecting a major, call EOC at 984-3286.

2. TB clearance and proof of the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) immunization:  Complete and submit the Maui Community College Health Clearance Form to the MCC Health Center in person, by mail, or by fax (fax 242-1578).  Fill in the top third of the form and have your physician or health clinic nurse complete the remainder.  MMR is waived for those born before 1957. The Health Center also provides health screening, 984-3493.

3. Once admitted (approximately 4-7 days after receipt of an application), go on-line to myuhportal.hawaii.edu and click on Get a UH user name and establish your UH student account.

STEP 2:  PREPARING TO ENROLL IN CLASSES

1. Take the math and English COMPASS placement tests at The Learning Center (TLC).  Testing takes about 2 hours on a computer and can be done on a walk-in basis.  Testing is free, calculators permitted, and a picture ID is required.  Disability services can be provided.  West Maui residents can take the tests at the MCC Lahaina Education Center by appointment (60 Kenui St., in the Front Street Apartment complex, 661-7900).  Testing is also available at a number of ACT Testing sites or affiliates nationwide.  If you need help preparing for the placement test, call the Educational Opportunity Center at 984-3286.

2.  If you have attended college prior, request transcripts from your previous college(s) be sent DIRECTLY to Admissions Office, Maui Community College, 310 Ka`ahumanu Avenue, Kahului, HI 96732.  They will need to be evaluated by Counseling through an Advanced Standing Evaluations.

3.  If you need Financial Aid to help pay for college, call EOC at 984-3286 for financial aid and scholarship search assistance.  Maui CC's financial aid priority deadline is March 1.

STEP THREE:  CHOOSING A MAJOR & CREATING AN ED PLAN

1.  After you’ve taken your placement tests, make an appointment with an academic counselor (984-3306) for help with major requirements and appropriate courses. Be prepared to explore classes you plan to enroll in, full- or part-time enrollment, and whether you plan to earn a bachelor’s degree.

2.  Pick up the MCC college catalog from Admissions & Records or view it on-line for degree and certificate programs and course descriptions.

STEP FOUR:  REGISTERING AND PAYING FOR CLASSES

1.  Select courses from the current Schedule of Classes. Make sure you meet the course prerequisites and have checked to see if space is available at maui.hawaii.edu/learning/schedule.html

2. Register on-line at myuhportal.hawaii.edu/ on or after assigned Registration Dates (see Academic Calendar).

3. Review the tuition payment options.  Payment can be made in full on-line or in-person, or installments on-line through the UH installment plan on MyUH Portal. Financial aid recipients should contact the Financial Aid Office (984-3277) to see if their classes are being held. Failure to pay for classes by stated deadlines may cause you to be disenrolled.

STEP FIVE:  GETTING READY FOR THE SEMESTER

1.  Purchase required textbooks in person or on-line at the MCC Bookstore.  Take your registration slip/receipt.

2.  Attend an Orientation Session for new, returning, or transfer students (See Schedule of Classes).

3.  If disability accommodations are needed, make an appointment with the Disabilities Coordinator at 984-3306.

4.  Students are expected to attend all classes in which they are enrolled.  The first class is especially important and instructors may drop "no shows" unless prior arrangements have been made.

Good luck and have a great semester!
