|MANOA is not considering unsolicited work for the time being. Please check this page for updates on our submission policy. If you have questions about a previous submission, please write to firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you.|
MANOA publishes fiction, poetry, natural-history and personal esd short reviews.
Fiction, poetry, essays, and interviews need not be related to Asia, the Pacific, or Hawai‘i, nor be by writers from the region. We are not interested in genre or formalist writing for its own sake, or Pacific exotica and picturesque impressions of the region.
Translations are usually commissioned by a guest editor, who is responsible for the portion of the issue featuring writings from a country or region of Asia or the Pacific. The rest of the issue is usually reserved for North American writing. We may occasionally run translations other than those selected by the guest editor, but you might want to query us first
We do not have specific length, subject-matter, or style requirements. We do prefer to see five or six poems at a time, depending upon the length. Like most literary magazines, we suggest reading a copy of the magazine to get an idea of what we like to publish. To order a sample copy, please visit our ordering page.
Reviews are on recent books in the arts, humanities, or natural sciences; usually, these books are related to Asia, the Pacific, or Hawai‘i, or are published in these places. Separate guidelines are available for reviews.
MANOA is published twice a year, summer and winter, and accepts submissions throughout the year. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with each submission for the return of the submission and/or our reply. Submissions should be originals or good photocopies; handwritten manuscripts, dot-matrix printouts, and originals typed on onion-skin sheets are not acceptable. Please allow about four weeks for reply on poetry manuscripts, essays, and reviews, and about six months for reply on fiction manuscripts. Our mailing address is MANOA, English Dept., University of Hawai‘i, Honolulu, HI 96822.
Please also note that we do not accept submissions by e-mail.
If you have further questions, we'll be glad to answer them. Just drop us a note. We try to reply promptly.
