MLMED - Application

Aloha!

Thanks for your interest in the Master of Secondary Education Degree with a Middle Level Emphasis (a.k.a. MLMED).

The MLMED attempts to improve middle level education (grades 4-10) in Hawai'i and beyond. The program works with educators from middle grades schools and other educational entities to promote research-based innovation. Approximately 130 Hawai'i educators have participated in the MLMED since it began in summer, 1996. Participants are asked to transform their own professional practice and to
serve as leaders for change within and beyond their schools/offices. Therefore, participants are encouraged to enlist other colleagues from their school/office to enter the MLMED as a support group, and as a nucleus for change. Moanalua Middle School (Oahu) and Maui Waena (Maui) are the MLMED Partner Schools, hosting our classes (easy access and parking), and collaborating with university faculty on school improvement. Other schools with participants in the program are considered Participating Schools.

You are invited to apply for admission to the MLMED Program. Announcement regarding starting dates for the next cohorts is pending. Application to the MLMED is a 3-part process, entailing admission by:

  1. the UH Graduate Division,
  2. the EDCS Dept. Master of Education Degree Program; and
  3. the Middle Level Emphasis Area (MLMED).

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree, and must submit:

  1. all higher education transcripts;
  2. a statement of objectives; and
  3. three letters of recommendation.

We strongly suggest that you direct your statement of objectives to the MLMED's Professional Standards for Educators of Early Adolescents (see program description). No test, e.g., GRE, is required.

  • Complete application materials may be obtained from the EDCS Dept.: 956-4401.
  • Application dates for admission to the next cohorts (pending)
  • Review of applications dates (pending)

If you have any questions, please call or e-mail. Thank you.

Sincerely,
