Again 'Ai'ai dove down into the water carrying his fishhook and another stone. He placed the fishhook, Manaiakalani, into the cave and prayed for success. After a short while he knew that the puhi was hooked and tugged on the ropes. Quickly, 'Ai'ai climbed into a canoe and both canoes took off towards shore, each pulling one rope. On shore the people of the two communities helped the paddlers to reel in the puhi. After a long struggle, the puhi was pulled to shore at Leho'ula.

Although the people tried, they could not kill the giant
puhi. Only when 'Ai'ai threw three large basalt stones at the puhi did it finally die. The head of the puhi was removed and cooked for the people to enjoy. The bones from its wide-open jaw can still be found on the shore in Hāna. 'Ai'ai became famous in Hāna as a successful lawai'a.
