Kū'ula filled three small gourds with water that would explode in the fire. Then, the home of Kū'ula was set on fire. The ali'i heard the gourds burst and thought that Kū'ula and his 'ohana were dead. 'Ai'ai followed the smoke to the mountains where he lived in a cave, while Kū'ula and Hina drifted with the smoke to the sea. Kū'ula and Hina turned into fish and as they swam away from Hāna all of the fish followed them. No fish remained in the waters of Hāna.
Kū'ula and Hina became akua that controlled certain fish and fishing methods.
