Using Magnetic Resonance Techniques to Study the Brain and Brain Diseases

Text Box: University of Hawai’i Neuroscience and Magnetic Resonance Research Program

Usage of the 3-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Scanner

Our research program aims to bring together scientists interested in finding interdisciplinary solutions in the field of neuroscience. With research applications in functional MRI (fMRI), MR spectroscopy, perfusion MRI, and advanced MR applications using image processing tools (e.g. statistical parametric maps or SPM, FreeSurfer, etc.), the Siemens 3.0 Tesla MRI system is a powerful imaging system.

Researchers with an IRB approved clinical protocol that require the use of an MR scanner and are interested in using the 3 Tesla MR system are invited to contact Dr. Linda Chang (
email: lchang@hawaii.edu) or Dr. Thomas Ernst (email: tmernst@hawaii.edu) to discuss the use of the system. He/she can submit a Proposal for the use of the 3 T MR system (download PDF file), which will require approval by the MR Advisory Committee before initiating a study on the system.

Text Box: Policies and Procedures for Research

Initiating new research projects using the 3.0 Tesla MRI System requires reading the Policies and Procedures for Research Use of the 3.0 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) System (download PDF file). These policies include the procedures for submitting a new research protocol to use the system as well as the fee schedule for the type of studies.

Completing the Safety Training Program will  also be required for new researchers using the 3T-MRI system. The following downloadable form will address the potential hazards of the MRI environment and is an introduction to the MR Safety Training Module:
