Prechemistry Assessments are given in January, April, August and November.
Doing well in CHEM 161 depends on, among other things, a thorough understanding
of all prerequisite material. Passing the Prechemistry Assessment should
not by itself be regarded as a guarantee of success.
Students wishing to take a Chinese, Japanese or Korean language course for the first time at UH Manoa must receive clearance from the department before registering. Students with no previous experience in the language should go to the department office (Moore 382) for clearance. Students with previous experience (i.e., formal classroom training, residence in the country of its use, or cohabitation with a native speaker) must take a placement test.

All students who plan to get an undergraduate degree from UH Manoa must have credit for English (ENG) 100, ENG 100A, ENG 101/101L, or English Language Institute (ELI) 100. Students who do not have credit should plan to take one of these courses within their first two semesters at UH Manoa. Students are placed based on their SAT/ACT scores (if high enough) or by taking the Manoa Writing Program (MWP) Writing Placement Exam. Students with extremely high SAT, ACT or Writing Placement Exam scores will be given an opportunity to earn exemption from ENG/ELI 100. For details, please see www.mwp.hawaii.edu or refer to the Foundations-Written Communication Requirement flyer that was included in the UH Manoa acceptance packet.
Students who need to register for an exam can do so by going to www.mwp.hawaii.edu or by faxing or mailing in the registration form that was included with their acceptance letter. Students who are unable to make any of the exam dates should call the MWP office at 956-6660 or email mwp@hawaii.edu for alternatives.
