Placement into English courses ENG 100, ENG 100A and ENG 101/101L, and English Language Institute courses ELI 073 and ELI 100 is determined as follows:
Native speakers of English are placed into ENG 100* or ENG 101/101L based on their test scores** (SAT, ACT, COMPASS, or Manoa Writing Placement Exam). Students can view their placement by checking in MyUH.
Students without test scores should visit <http://www.mwp.hawaii.edu> to find out how their writing placement will be determined. They can also call the Manoa Writing Program at 956-6660.
* Students with ENG 100 placement may be eligible to register for ENG 100A. Contact the Honors Program at 956-8391 or email honors@hawaii.edu for details.
** Students with extremely high SAT or ACT scores may also be given an opportunity to earn exemption from ENG 100/ELI 100. See <http://www.mwp.hawaii.edu> for details.
Non-native speakers of English are placed based on ELI exemption criteria (if exempt), or by taking the ELI’s writing placement test. (See <http://www.hawaii.edu/eli/students/> and click on "Clearance of ELI Requirements" for ELI exemption criteria.)
For more information about writing placement, please visit http://www.mwp.hawaii.edu for ENG courses or http://www.hawaii.edu/eli for ELI courses, or refer to the Foundations-Written Communication Requirement flyer that was included in the UH Manoa acceptance packet.
All students who have English as a second language, and do not meet ELI exemption criteria, are required to take the ELI Placement Test for possible placement into listening/speaking, reading and writing courses. See the ELI website or the UH-Manoa Catalog for a list of ELI exemption criteria and more information about ELI courses.
