Courses Requiring Approval

Registration Error Messages

Restricted Enrollment Courses

Refer to the Approval Override Codes chart that identifies situations requiring approval from your instructor, program, department, or college. Check the Placement Exams section to see if a test is required before enrolling in a course. Look for course restrictions (e.g., department, program or instructor approval, major or college restriction) in the course listings of the Schedule of Classes. If you believe that you qualify to take these restricted courses you must obtain permission from the program, department or college representative before your registration assignment arrives. The representative must enter the appropriate registration override code for the courses you have been given permission to take before you register, or you will not be able to register for them. Please remember that after the override code has been entered into your record, you must still register for the course in MyUH within your designated registration period. To find out whether the approval code has already been entered, login to MyUH and review the Check My Registration Status page. Note: The 'degree' restriction on courses numbered 600 and above applies to unclassified students who must obtain approval from the respective department in order to register.

Course Prerequisites

You are responsible for checking the prerequisites of all courses in which you wish to enroll. Prerequisite information may be found in the current University of Hawaii at Manoa Catalog or with the department offering the course. During the registration period, you may view course prerequisites for current course offerings in MyUH by using the "Search and Register" option in the Registration menu.  Select the course you are interested in, click on the CRN on the "Look-Up Classes to Add" page and find detailed course information at the "View Catalog Entry" link.  If you receive the prerequisite error message while registering, you may also click on the CRN of the course to view the prerequisite requirements.

Generally, prerequisite courses must be passed with a "C" grade, although certain courses require different grades. (See the department offering the course for grade requirements.) If you do not meet course prerequisites, you may be prevented from registering for, or disenrolled from, the course(s) in question.

If you do not meet prerequisite requirements but feel that you are qualified to enroll in a course, see the department representative for approval. The department representative must enter the Manoa Course Approval Override code into your MyUH record to allow you to bypass prerequisite course requirements. You may view these codes on your Check My Registration Status page after logging in to MyUH. If you receive an override code, you must still register yourself for an open section of the course during your designated registration period. Instructors and departmental staff are not able to register students for classes.

Students with no previous knowledge of a foreign language must start with the foreign language course numbered "101."

Corequisite Courses

You must enter all co-requisite course selections at the same time when you register. For example, ITE 601 and ITE 602 are co-requisite courses. Therefore both Course Reference Numbers (CRN) must be entered at the same time using the Quick Registration/Add or Drop My Classes page. If you do not, there will be an error message displayed that there is a corequisite for this course. In the same manner, when you drop a course that has a co-requisite, you must drop all corequisite courses. Please see the departmental representative if you have any questions about registering for corequisite courses. Note: If you are given approval to take a course without the corresponding corequisite course, the department offering the course must enter the Corequisite Override code for the course that you plan to take before you register for the course.

Variable Credit Courses
Directed Reading and Research Courses (x99)
Thesis 700 and Dissertation 800 Courses*

If you wish to enroll in a variable credit course you will need departmental consent. The Course Reference Number for variable credit courses may not be displayed in the course listings, so please obtain it from the department offering the course before you register. Use the Quick Registration/Add or Drop My Classes page to enter the Course Reference Number. You are automatically taken to a page that allows you to indicate the number of credits that the department has approved for you. If no changes are made, the default (lowest number of credits in the range) will be what you are registered for. If you need to change the number of variable credits later, you may do so on the Change Class Options page before the deadline to add classes. Note: If you are taking more than one section of the same directed reading course (x99), you must also request the department offering the course to enter the Manoa Duplicate/Repeatable Course Override code into your MyUH record before you register for these courses.

* If you are enrolled in only a Dissertation 800 course for 1 credit and classified as a non-resident, your tuition and fees should be charged at the resident rate. If other courses are taken, your tuition will be based on the non-resident rate for all classes enrolled.
