Writing Placement
(ENG 100, 100A, 101/101L and ELI 073, 100) http://www.mwp.hawaii.edu

Placement into English courses ENG 100, ENG 100A and ENG 101/101L, and English Language Institute courses ELI 073 and ELI 100 is determined as follows:

Native speakers of English are placed based on their SAT/ACT scores (if high enough) or by taking the Manoa Writing Program (MWP) Writing Placement Exam. Students who want to take their introductory writing course in Spring 2008 must either have high enough SAT/ACT scores or have taken the Writing Placement Exam on or before Saturday, November 3, 2007. Students who need to take the Writing Placement Exam and are unable to make the November 3 exam date should call the MWP office at 956-6660 or email mwp@hawaii.edu for options. (Note: Students with extremely high SAT, ACT or Writing Placement Exam scores will also be given an opportunity to earn exemption from ENG 100/ELI 100.)

Non-native speakers of English are placed based on the Manoa Writing Program (MWP) Writing Placement Exam if taken in November 2007 or earlier. All others are placed based on ELI exemption criteria (if exempt), or by taking the ELI’s writing placement test. (See http://www.hawaii.edu/eli/students/ for ELI exemption criteria.)

  • Those who are exempt from the ELI based on attending school for 6 years or more in the U.S., Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom are placed as described in the "Native speakers of English" section, above.
  • Those who are exempt from the ELI based on other exemption criteria are placed into ELI 100.
  • Those who do not meet any ELI exemption criteria must take the ELI’s writing test. (See details in the next section.)

For more information about writing placement, please visit http://www.mwp.hawaii.edu for ENG courses or http://www.hawaii.edu/eli for ELI courses, or refer to the Foundations-Written Communication Requirement flyer that was included in the UH Manoa acceptance packet.

English Language Institute (International and Immigrant Students)
http://www.hawaii.edu/eli/

All students who have English as a second language, and do not meet ELI exemption criteria, are required to take the ELI Placement Test for possible placement into listening/speaking, reading and writing courses. See the ELI website or the UH-Manoa Catalog for a list of ELI exemption criteria and more information about ELI courses.
