Ready to begin your journey at UH Mānoa? As a College of Natural Sciences student, you have special tasks that must be completed to ensure your first day is a success. Complete our online orientation, and be ready to start your journey on the right foot. We recommend completing the modules in order for the easiest experience.

STAR is the degree-auditing system used at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and contains helpful tools to assist you along your educational journey. Complete the module to learn more about this amazing website!

Students should be able to…

  • locate general education, focus, and major requirements on the Academic Essentials tab
  • locate Advisor Notes on the Academic Essentials tab
  • locate Courses Not Yet Classified on the Academic Essentials tab
  • utilize the What If Journey tab to explore other major options
  • interpret transfer transcripts on the Transcripts tab
  • execute next steps necessary for courses that transferred over with SYLL designation
  • access best-fit scholarships through the Scholarships tab
  • state when STAR scholarships become available

Placement exams play a critical role in selecting key courses for all life science students. To learn more about the key placement exams, and to figure out if you need to take them or not, complete this module!

  • determine which chemistry and mathematics courses are recommended to take based on degree and major of choice within the College of Natural Sciences

CNS Placement Exams

You know which placement exams you need to take, thanks to Module 3-1. If you need to take a Chemistry or Mathematics placement exam, this module will answer 7 common questions that you’ll want the answers to before you take your exam.

This module is strongly recommended if you need to take the Chemistry Placement Exam or Mathematics Placement Exam.

Students should be able to…

  • navigate to online resources for preparation assistance for both the Chemistry and Mathematics placement exams
  • identify the appropriate time to attempt both the Chemistry and Mathematics placement exams
  • identify an appropriate point of contact for questions about the Chemistry Placement Exam
  • identify an appropriate point of contact for questions about the Mathematics Placement Exam

CNS Placement Exams

The STAR GPS Registration Tab, also known as the Graduation Pathway, provides a robust planner for students and advisors to collaborate on. To learn more, complete the module.

Students should be able to…

  • manipulate the graduation pathway to reflect their own ideal plan
  • identify who to contact for questions regarding their graduation pathway
  • check the status of their focus requirement progress from the Graduation Pathway
  • add focus requirements, minor and certificate requirements, prerequisite requirements, as well as personal choice courses, to their graduation pathway

ACE is an efficient way to register for a cluster of courses that are tailored to a student’s major of choice. Learn which clusters are best for you based on your major by completing this module.

This module is for INCOMING FRESHMEN, FALL SEMESTER ONLY.

  • complete appropriate placement exams prior to registration
  • identify appropriate ACE cluster to register for based on academic major

GPS Registration is an efficient way to register for individual courses at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Learn how it works by completing this module.

Students should be able to…

  • complete appropriate placement exams prior to registration
  • identify whether or not there are holds on their account
  • execute necessary steps for removing holds
  • register for planned courses through GPS Registration
  • waitlist for courses through GPS Registration
  • access list of textbooks needed for registered courses
  • pay for tuition

Academic advisors play a key role in assisting students with achieving their academic goals. As a College of Natural Sciences student, you have College and Major advisors. They could be the same person, or different people. Learn who your advisors are, and how to contact them by completing this module.

Students should be able to…

  • define the role of a College advisor
  • define the role of a Major advisor
  • identify who to go to for form signatures
  • identify which academic advisor(s) are appropriate for which major(s)
  • locate contact information for their academic advisor(s)
  • locate the student timelines on the SASC Website

Incoming Student Timeline

It’s recommended that you meet with your academic advisors at least once a semester. Watch this video to learn how to book appointments with your College and Major advisors.

Please note that if you are using Insight, you will not be able to book an appointment until at least 48 hours after registering for 1 Mānoa credit.

Students should be able to…

  • schedule an appointment with their assigned Major or College advisor
  • cancel or reschedule appointments online at least 24 hours prior to original appointment time
